There are a lot of cultural niches coming out of Japan that seem pretty ‘out there’ by Western standards, with the emergence of massive, super-high-energy, all-girl pop idol groups such as AKB48 (the 48 stands for the number of members in the ‘band’) a prime example. Fans flock to their concerts in the millions, where the main attraction is arguably not the music, but their off-the wall, tireless, and perfectly choreographed dance routines. Now, to bring that kind of energy home, Japanese electronics company DMM has created a customizable, J-Pop inspired robot with 3D printed parts, that can be programmed to dance on command.

The Department of Natural Resources is looking to lead the way on Michigan trails by providing a user-friendly accessible trail map system online. Michigan trails are the reason the DNR and the Michigan Trails Advisory Council came together to meet at the Ralph A. MacMullan Conference Center Wedensday. One of the key items on the agenda was a discussion of turning Michigan into the ‘Digital Trail State’ by connecting all public and private trails and making each one accessible in one location online in an ‘Open Data Portal.’ “So, no matter what kind of trail you want, you’d go to one site on the DNR website and be able to download information on whether it’s snowmobile, hiking, (or) biking trails,” Bill Manson, Michigan Snowmobile Association executive director, said.

The United States and the European Commission signed the “Copernicus Cooperation Arrangement” which will facilitate data sharing from the Copernicus constellation of Sentinel Earth Observation satellites among a broad spectrum of users on both sides of the Atlantic. U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Science, Space and Health Jonathan Margolis and European Commission Director for Space Policy, Copernicus and Defence Philippe Brunet signed the arrangement in Washington, D.C., on October 16. The arrangement articulates a shared U.S.-EU vision to pursue full, free, and open data policies for government Earth observation satellites, the U.S. State Department said.

Since County Connect was launched a year and a half ago, great strides have been made in advancing the service. County Connect is an integrated service and information request tracking system that was approved for development in the 2014 Strathcona County budget to better manage and respond to requests from residents. “Staff is working hard on County Connect,” said Rob Schneider, director of Strathcona County Information Technology Services during a Priorities Committee meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 29. “They are working hard in preparation of the Oct. 26 public launch – the public facing side of County Connect. We have been using it internally for a while and making sure our processes are working well.

If you recall, we ran a publication on Open Data a while ago. Open data, by its very definition, is well, open. Certain data by that logic has to made publicly available to everyone to use, analyze and republish as they wish, without restriction from copyrights or other mechanisms of control. In order to further discuss the implications and applications of Open Data, an open dialogue was held at the Sri Lanka Press Institute, organized by Transparency International Sri Lanka and Internews Network, which is a US-based News and ICT agency. The speakers for the day, apart from being well versed in the areas of Open Data, were also well-known figures.

Open access is thriving at Nature Publishing Group (NPG). Sixty three per cent of original research articles published to date on nature.com in 2015 are open access, nearly 10,000 papers. Ten years ago, NPG introduced its first fully open access journal. Today, NPG publishes over 80 journals with an open access option. In January 2015, NPG introduced Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY) as the default open access license option on its 20+ fully owned open access journals. The percentage of authors choosing CC BY across all of NPG’s open access journals has risen dramatically – from 26% in 2014 to 96% in September 2015. Other licenses are still available on demand.

HMRC will share anonymised data on tax payers to let students see how much they could earn, depending on which course they study, according to the Independent. This week the government hosted a hack event called “job hack” for developers, designers, careers advisors, government officials and young people themselves, which challenged the attendees to come up with ideas to help young people get access to training and employment opportunities. During the event, developers use a range of open government datasets such as employment statistics, earning outcomes and school performance tables, which will be linked to create applications.

Open Access week starts at the VU with Symposium Connecting Data for Research Monday October 19, the first day of the Open Access Week 2015, rector magnificus Vinod Subramaniam opened the symposium Connecting Data for Research at the VU. More than 100 participants from all over the Netherlands discussed the importance of sharing research data and the many issues that are related to it. After the introduction by Ron Dekker (NWO),  keynote speaker Mireille van Eechoud (Institute for Information Law, UvA) zoomed in on legal aspects. Her urgent advise: be prepared to engage with data protection law! The second keynote speaker was Barend Mons, chairman of the High Level Expert Group on ‘European Open Science Cloud’ from the European Commission.
