The American Numismatic Society (ANS) is pleased to announce, in collaboration with Dr. Jere Bacharach, Department of History at the University of Washington, and Dr. Sherif Anwar, College of Archaeology, Cairo University, the digital publication of the non-hoard numismatic collection of the Egyptian National Library. The catalog consists of more than 6,500 objects, ranging from late Roman glassware and pre-Islamic Sasanian coinage to the modern Egyptian coinage of Anwar Sadat. The collection is particularly strong in Medieval Islamic coinage across all major dynasties. The catalog differs from its predecessors in a number of ways. The collection has been photographed in color, with inscriptions read and transcribed from these images.

Midwest Real Estate Data (MRED), Chicagoland’s multiple listing service (MLS), is participating with the Chicago section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE Chicago) and other technology companies at the Land of Lincoln Hackathon, an event promoting the public data found at the State of Illinois open data portal. The Land of Lincoln Hackathon looks to promote awareness of the great resources for the citizens of Illinois and foster innovation from the academic and professional communities.  The 2015 Hack Challenge is for those who submit software solutions that creatively utilize the public data found at the Illinois open data portal.

California Geographic Information Officer Scott Gregory thinks it can. Working with the state’s Department of Water Resources, Gregory helped create a new app that allows citizens to tattle on water wasters. Users can take a geo-located snapshot of the offense and upload it to a platform that notifies local authorities. Since the app debuted, the state has received more than 5,000 reports of water waste, Gregory said. The project demonstrates how GIS can help solve statewide problems. “If there’s a common language in government, it’s geography,” Gregory recently told StateScoop in his Sacramento office. “That’s the common language that we speak. Most government data that we manage has a geographic component to it.

On 26 September, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced a new Australian Aid Program initiative in Timor-Leste aimed at tackling chronic undernutrition and anaemia in women and children. Catalpa International is proud to be one of the implementing partners. The initiative is supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (DFAT) innovationXchange, created in March 2015 to support innovation across the Australian aid program. In Timor-Leste 50 per cent of children under five years are stunted, an indicator of long term nutritional deprivation. Children who are stunted have a greater risk of illness, impaired cognitive development and lower educational attainment.

California’s growing collection of open data websites has another addition: a portal focused on all things about green government. A beta of the GreenGov open data portal was launched ahead of the Innovation Code-a-Thon this weekend on Oct. 24-25. The $25,000 contest at the Ziggurat building in West Sacramento is sponsored by the Department of General Services, GovOps and several other departments and companies. A prize pool of $25,000 is up for grabs, funded through 2014 legislation from Assemblymember Mike Gatto, D-Glendale, creating a total of three innovation contests. This weekend’s hackathon will challenge participants to develop apps and tools that improve government sustainability, via the “Green Gov Challenge.

This morning, the House Committee on Administration moved forward with new rules on how members of Congress spend taxpayer dollars on auto mileage, air travel, office decoration and more. The resolution requires more detailed disclosure on travel spending and makes it more difficult for members to spend lavishly on office decor or chartered travel. The changes emerged from a task force led by Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., and Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., set up by the committee in response to excesses by former Rep. Aaron Schock. Perhaps most importantly, the committee has committed to releasing house expenditure reports as open data.

The NIH is offering a cash reward to researchers who come up with a plan to advance so-called open science as it part of its continued efforts to encourage data sharing. The winner of the newly announced Open Science Prize will receive $230,000. It will be selected from a roster of up to 6 competitors, who will be given $80,000 to develop their ideas based on the advice of a panel of experts. The competing open data concepts must be submitted by December 2016, and the winner is expected to be selected on Feb. 28. “Research is a global, data-driven enterprise and our ability to improve health increasingly hinges on our ability to manage and make sense of the enormous amounts of data being produced by scientific research,” said NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins, in a statement.

Governor Jerry Brown has cleared his desk of hundreds of bills sent to him by the Legislature. In total, the Governor signed 808 bills and vetoed 133 bills. Among the approved bills were victories that hold true to the values and legislative priorities of California Forward’s Partnership for Public Accountability. In order for democracy to work, it requires elected leaders to be responsive and representative, government decisions transparent, and voters empowered through an electoral process that holds officials accountable for results. Among this year’s wins were two bills that make significant progress for transparency in local governments by setting new standards for open data.

California is launching a new open data portal focused on sustainability. The Socrata backed portal is the latest entrant in a growing number of such websites launched by various arms of the California government. The “GreenGov” portal offers data on the location of electric car refueling stations as well as information about greenhouse gas emissions. The launch comes ahead of the GreenGov code-a-thon happening over the weekend of October 24, which offers $25,000 for developers to write programs that help the local government be more green. The effort is amiable although, the high number of portals offered by the California government each containing disparate data sets calls into question the overall usefulness of any of them.

Last Friday, an unmanned octocopter lifted off from a grassy park in a Toronto ravine. It ascended 75 metres and then twisted its mounted camera to scan the volume of traffic moving along Don Mills Road. With a live high-definition video feed transmitted through a ground station to a new online tool designed by U of T engineers, this simple demonstration is part of an ambitious plan to improve traffic monitoring and management through open data. Called the Connected Vehicles and Smart Transportation (CVST) portal and headed by Professor Alberto Leon-Garcia (ECE), this plan aims to bring harmony to how we monitor and manage traffic by integrating existing traffic monitoring data, using new technologies to address the gaps and generating insights that can inform decision making.
