Photo: Bloomberg While broad patterns in Indian trade are rather well known and well studied, what we’ve largely lacked so far is a mechanism to track Indian imports at a much more granular level. Now, thanks to the efforts of the customs department (icegate.gov.in/DailyList/DL), which uploads commodity-wise and port-wise trade data on a daily basis, and activist and open data enthusiast Srinivas Kodali (bit.ly/1H7gfys) , who has scraped and compiled the data, it is possible to look at Indian exports and imports at a much more granular level.

This week the Open Government Partnership (OGP), a group of 66 countries, is holding a global summit in Mexico City to advance a new model for 21st-century governance. The Partnership is dedicated to making governments everywhere more “open, accountable and responsive to citizens.” A core part of that effort is promoting open data — government data published online, in easy-to-use formats, that anyone can analyze, use and republish. At the summit, the OGP’s leadership will invite member countries to commit to a new set of principles, the Open Data Charter, that lays out specific, comprehensive guidelines for open government data. The Charter is a watershed moment for a global movement that has been pushing governments to make more data more open in better ways.

A transnational collaboration between two Latin American digital sites has resulted in yet another data journalism project that exposes structures of some of the region’s biggest power players. NarcoData, a project between Mexican digital news site Animal Político and Chilean digital platform Poderopedia, peels back the curtain on criminal groups in Mexico over the past four decades. So far, the site has published visualizations, accompanied by videos, showing the growth of organized crime over the past seven Mexican presidencies, with a spotlight on that of current President Enrique Peña Nieto.

Bath is the “perfect place” to set the next James Bond movie, according to an MP. The city was praised for its creative and digital industries by Digital Economy Minister, Ed Vaizey, who said Bath was “leading the way” in digital terms. He was responding to a question from Bath MP Ben Howlett on what work is being done to develop the sector even further. Mr Vaizey said: “We continue to support tech hubs all across the country and I was particularly pleased to recognise Bath Hacked in a speech yesterday I gave on smarter cities where Bath is leading the way in smart city technology and the internet of things. “They are so high tech they would be the perfect place to set the next Bond movie when it is set in the UK.” He even referred to Mr Howlett as a potential Bond.

A while ago I spoke to an acquaintance working on human rights in Central Asia. I told her that I worked on open data, trying to support governments in publishing data that is machine-readable, freely reusable and that can be distributed by anyone. When I mentioned that in the Central Asian republics this movement was just gaining track, I received a strange look and questions: “What do you think open data can change? And who would trust data published by those governments anyway?” A similar question was raised by Zara Rahman in a post on the irrelevance of open data in Bangladesh, a country in which press freedom is increasingly restricted and where Niloy Chakrabarti became the latest victim in a series of murdered bloggers.
