An increasing number of our datasets are available without registration or authentication using open data licences described in our Data Access Policy. These data are for use with an open licence and are not classified as personal. We are also working to gain open data certification via the Open Data Institute. We also provide links to other open data resources that may be of interest.

In the middle of a Tuesday afternoon last December, a shootout erupted at a busy intersection in the Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans. Nearly 50 rounds were fired, riddling several cars with bullets, yet only one person was hit; the man sustained a leg injury that was not life-threatening. A year and a half before, in September 2013, an all too similar gunfight took place around midnight in the city’s Carrollton neighborhood. This time, a bullet pierced a nearby home, striking and killing an 11-year-old girl. These two unrelated cases in one of the country’s worst cities for gun violence can help us understand why murder statistics alone are a bad metric for measuring gun violence trends.

High school student George Sivulka is the founder and lead organizer of NASA’s Space Apps Next Gen, a high school hackathon dedicated to teaching and inspiring students to solve global scientific challenges using NASA datasets. Sivulka has been working as a NASA research intern for two years, conducting data analysis research in computational physics simulations studying landline and IED detection. He’s also researched and visualized nosocomial disease transmission with the Mount Sinai Medical System. Sivulka is passionate about the fusion of computer science with the physical sciences and space technology, and using programming and data to solve real world problems. Knowing that I can wake up in the morning and do science wherever I am, and whenever I want to is extremely empowering.

During its regularly scheduled commission meeting, the Federal Election Commission unveiled its new betaFEC site. The redesigned online home of the nation’s election watchdog — created with the help of the good folks at 18F — will give the public easily accessible and understandable campaign finance information through a host of new features. Commissioner Ann Ravel called it a “leap forward in the goal of transparency” — and we couldn’t agree more. And a huge leap forward it was: Included in the $3.5 million overhaul is brand new infrastructure, HTTPS security and database synchronization, among other things. To start off, it now incorporates intuitive graphics to make it easier to understand the data you’re looking at.

Maurice McNaughton is actively involved in the emerging open data movement in the Caribbean as a founding member of the Caribbean Open Institute (COI). The COI is a regional coalition of Caribbean organizations that engages and works with regional governments, researchers, journalists, technologists, NGOs, and academics, to raise awareness, strengthen capacity, and foster collaborations towards the adoption of open development approaches. He joined Scoop News Group in… The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy is laying the groundwork to host a governmentwide open data exposition slated for “a year from now,” a policy advisor to the U.S. chief technology officer announced Friday.
