Mauritius is well placed to implement an open data initiative and demonstrates strong top-level commitments to transparency and to innovation, reveals an Open Data Readiness Assessment (ODRA) conducted by the World Bank in June this year in the context of the Open Data programme for the country. An Open Data Readiness validation workshop was held yesterday afternoon at the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre, in Bell Village, during which the ODRA findings were presented to stakeholders. Organised by the Ministry of Technology, Communication and Innovation (MTCI), the event brought together stakeholders from several sectors to validate the World Bank’s assessment of the country’s situation on open data readiness. The ODRA reveals that Mauritius is well poised to open up datasets.

City of Waterloo Codefest a hit for the community Waterloo – With just 36 hours to create a functioning mobile application and only three minutes to present their product, three teams were selected as the winners of Waterloo Codefest. “Codefest brought together industry professionals with some of the biggest names in technology,” said Mayor Dave Jaworsky. “This collaboration and spirit of discovery resulted in some impressive mobile apps.” Taking the top prize of $1,500 and a year’s worth of cloud infrastructure (a value of $6,500) was Timber. Created by two Sir John A. Macdonald high school students and a first-year University of Waterloo student, this application connects residents with their environment by mapping the city’s tree canopy one tree at a time.

Open data could solve a number of social and economic problems, according to the Open Data Institute. In 2013, the Open Data Institute partnered with not-for-profit organisation Nesta to launch the Open Data Challenge Series (ODCS) to support teams trying to find solutions to social challenges. As part of the programme, participating startups, small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs were invited to solve problems in the categories of crime and justice, education, energy and environment, housing, food, heritage and culture and jobs. Private and public sector open data were used by entrants to create proposed systems and three finalists were chosen to receive £5,000 for further development, with the winner receiving £50,000.

Substantial amount of documented occurrence records is awaiting publication stored in repositories and data indexing platforms, such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD Systems), or Integrated Digitized Biocollections (iDigBio). In order to streamline the authoring process, save taxonomists time, and provide a workflow for peer-review and quality checks, Pensoft has introduced an innovative feature that makes it possible to easily import occurrence records into a taxonomic manuscript. Prior to this development, Pensoft’s ARPHA Writing Tool (AWT) only used the “upload from Excel” approach for this workflow.

In 2015, a new global development agenda setting priorities for the next fifteen years has been launched. World leaders adopted Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in September at the United Nations. These goals represent a commitment by all countries to tackle some of the toughest global challenges: ending poverty and hunger, reducing inequality, providing good education, and achieving better health, good jobs and environmental sustainability. The goals also focus on peaceful and inclusive societies as well as international partnerships. The new agenda is a universal one; sustainable development is about all of us. Achieving it requires us to reexamine how we live, work, consume, carry out our lives, build our industries and run our governments.

The California Health Data Project team is exploring the feasibility of crowdsourcing human services data statewide so that application developers can query data from a single database and allow those apps to be scaled across the state of California. In order to get there, we first need to understand local efforts to collect, standardize and make this data available. We’re using GitHub Issues to organize feedback and work out in the open, so that we can better understand who’s doing what and where the greatest synergies lie. But we need your help. Background The California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) launched the California Health Data Project in March 2015 with three pilot projects running in Sacramento, Fresno, and Los Angeles.

That’s the good and the bad of Australia’s IoT industry as it currently stands as viewed by the Communications Alliance Internet of Things (IoT) Think Tank from its research into what it calls “the next great disruptor”. In line with the massive potential impact on the nation’s economy, the Communications Alliance estimates that there were 10 billion internet-connected devices in 2014, and expects this number to grow to between 30 and 50 billion by 2020. Titled “Enabling the Internet of Things for Australia”, the report warns that while Australia’s fundamental IoT capabilities are good, our lack of industry and Government focus risks Australia missing out on the opportunity for IoT competitive advantage and global market leadership.

It is safe to say that most of the people from around the world familiar with the terms “government openness” or “open data” have gathered in Mexico City this week to discuss the achievements, challenges and next steps of the Open Government Partnership (OGP). It is probably also safe to say that for an influential multi-stakeholder initiative like OGP, access to information should be a number one priority, and countries without freedom of information (FOI) laws should not be granted membership at all. So far it is not the case. Since OGP membership is based on a specific scoring mechanism, countries without FOI laws — such as Argentina, Costa Rica, Ghana and Kenya — are free join the partnership if they perform well in other critical areas.

A new report released by the Open Data Institute (ODI) and Nesta, the UK’s innovation charity, shows that open data could strengthen the UK economy. The report is being launched at the Open Government Partnership Global Summit in Mexico City, where governments across the globe gather to discuss how they can become more “transparent, accountable, and more responsive to their citizens”. The research for the report has been undertaken by PwC and examines the impact of the Open Data Challenge Series (ODCS). Having been established in April 2013, this series supports those using open data to create new, sustainable solutions for “key social challenges”. The analysis is based on the “original investment in the ODCS from the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, of £1.2m”.
