Over the past six months, journalist Gary Rogers and media strategist Alan Renwick have run the experimental website Urbs.London, a news operation which turns open data into news stories.The site was created to enable the public to understand complex data spreadsheets and research provided freely to the public.”What you see in an open data set is indeed open, but it is quite often hardly accessible to about 98 per cent of the population,” said Rogers, speaking at the Hyperlocal Data Journalism conference in Preston on Friday.”We decided that the best way to tell people a piece of information was to tell it as a story, so we decided to play with the idea of a data to narrative site.

By Dave Ross, ScD, The Task Force for Global Health It’s easy to mobilize our society when infectious diseases—such as Ebola or measles—are involved, but outside of infectious disease control, defining who’s responsible for the health of a society becomes complex and controversial. Yet no single stakeholder can be responsible for fixing the problem of chronic disease or disparities in health. We need to broaden our definition of health beyond what we know as “health care”—that is, being treated by a doctor when you’re sick. Health is the responsibility of individuals, organizations and communities, and putting health back in the hands of the many means democratizing our single greatest health resource: data. Our health depends on much more than health care and prescription drugs.

Minnesota didn’t do well on a national report about integrity in state government. But then again, not one state in the union passed with flying colors, with the leader of the pack, Alaska, scoring a “C” grade. The 2015 State Integrity Investigation, released late Sunday by the Washington D.C.-based Center for Public Integrity, gave Minnesota a “D-” when it comes to public access to information, how the government handles conflicts of interest, and a number of other criteria. This is despite the fact that the state has received praise for its “dearth of scandal,” the organization says; likewise, the Star Tribune writes Minnesota has a “reputation for relatively clean government.

Loopholes for lobbyists and politicians are a common part of statehouse culture nationwide, according to the 2015 State Integrity Investigation, a data-driven assessment of state government by the Center for Public Integrity and Global Integrity. The comprehensive probe found that in state after state, open records laws are laced with exemptions, and part-time legislators and agency officials engage in glaring conflicts of interests and cozy relationships with lobbyists while feckless, understaffed watchdogs struggle to enforce laws as porous as honeycombs. Oregon earned an overall score of 58 – an F grade – and tied for 44th among the 50 states in state government accountability and transparency. Washington earned a D+ and Idaho earned a D-.

The 2015 State Integrity Investigation is out today, measuring hundreds of variables to compile transparency and accountability grades for all 50 states. The grades aren’t good; Alaska, which scored the best in the nation, earned a C, and only two other states earned better than a D+. Eleven states failed. Idaho got a D-, with an overall score of 62; that score hardly budged from a similar assessment published in 2012. Idaho tied for 26th place among the states – up from 41st three years ago – but only because other states’ scores declined.

Under most ordinary circumstances, a grade of C- wouldn’t be encouraging, but according to a sweeping new report on state integrity, California’s middling score puts it in second place nationally.The Center for Public Integrity, a nonprofit investigative reporting group, examined state governments between January 2013 and March 2015, measuring each for transparency and accountability in subcategories such as political finance, election oversight, lobbying, and ethics, among others.The take-away: most states are pretty fucking corrupt. Only three — Alaska, California, and Connecticut — scored higher than a D+. Eleven states failed.”All together, the project presents a comprehensive look at transparency, accountability, and ethics in state government,” the CPI writes in its overview.

Amid a national push for more openness in law enforcement, the Louisville Metro Police Department has decided to  regularly share information on such subjects as violent crime, crime victims, police shootings and assaults on officers. Similar information is largely compiled and circulated within the department, but only recently has it been made more accessible to the public online. An LMPD “transparency” page launched last month houses the data and aims to shed more light on daily police work, said Maj. Robert Schroeder, commander of the Administrative Services Division. “I hope people can get a better sense of what’s going on in their community and how we operate,” Schroeder said. “The better we can keep them informed, the better off we all are.

Sometimes, it takes a crisis to inspire change for the better. One product of Hurricane Ike’s impact on the Cincinnati area in 2008 was the creation of the Regional Asset Verification and Emergency Network (RAVEN911). Since its 2010 debut, the system has been deployed to deal with emergency situations, proving just how much society benefits from data management. For the past five years, map-based RAVEN911 has been a tremendous asset. It takes data collected from schools, hospitals and fire stations and lays it over the maps via tools that incorporate real-time data, such as weather or traffic feeds, Government Technology reports. This allows RAVEN911 to address emergencies such as inclement weather,  chemical leaks and even bomb threats.
