SAP has been boasting about its “revolutionary” big data platform, SAP HANA, for years. While its claims have always been a bit suspect, recent revelations that HANA is riddled with critical security flaws only reinforce the mantra that, when it comes to big data infrastructure, open source is best. Most other companies get this, even hitherto proprietary giants like IBM. Will SAP get the memo in time to rejigger its approach to big data? Demandbase, a retargeting platform for B2B marketers, has launched a B2B data cloud and “Job Function Targeting,” the ability to target jobs within specific accounts. Peter Isaacson, Demandbase CMO, said the company’s secret sauce has been mapping IP addresses to companies in an account-centric way. The new cloud tech, he said, is an aggregation of data and technology that takes what Demandbase has always offered and combines it with the more individual or user-centric data from WhoToo, the Big Data firm that Demandbase acquired in September. Microsoft is building two new data centers to hold the data of its German and EU customers, the company has announced. EU courts recently ruled a previous data-transfer treaty with the US invalid, following the Snowden revelations of NSA data collection. Starting in late 2016, Microsoft’s cloud offerings will be hosted from the new data centers in Magdeburg and Frankfurt, CEO Satya Nadella announced Wednesday.  The Redmond-based corporation is partnering with Deutsche Telekom AG, whose sister company T-Systems will act as a trustee over the data, according to Reuters. Microsoft’s cloud offerings include the infrastructure service Azure, the customer-management platform Dynamics CRM Online and the widely popular Office 365.

Microsoft’s Chief Executive Satya Nadella announced on Tuesday at the Future Decoded conference that they are going to open data centres in the UK for the first time, competing with the likes of Amazon. The UK cloud market is currently worth around 3.4 billion pounds and is growing rapidly. Microsoft already has data centres in other parts of Europe and add the UK with their data centre in Ireland’s capital, Dublin. With the addition of two new data centres in the UK, Microsoft can offer its cloud applications such as Office 365 and Azure to UK companies and keep their data in UK jurisdiction.

Big Data is pervading world, and yet the risk of data is that if access to data is unequal, then the data itself can increase inequality: from have’s and have-not’s to know and know-not’s. I believe we need universal data fluency if we are to avoid this trap, and if we are to ensure that governments and corporations serve the true interests of the people. Microsoft announced on Wednesday that it will open new data centers in Germany in late 2016. For a company with such extensive cloud infrastructure, that might not seem so unusual, but these data centers are part of an ongoing effort to reassure European clients who worry that using United States-based tech services means subjecting themselves to U.S. government surveillance. T-Systems, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, will be the “data trustee” of the centers, and Microsoft employees won’t have access to any of the data stored there, except with T-Systems’ approval. Germany has strong privacy laws that Microsoft is hoping will protect the centers in case a U.S. government agency demands data from the company.

LOWER EAST SIDE — Calls about the presence of homeless people, homeless encampments and panhandling have spiked in the past year, continuing an upward trend of increasing 311 complaints over the past few years, data shows. More than 300 complaints relating to homeless people were recorded this year through October in the 10009 and 10002 zip codes — which covers the bulk of the East Village and Lower East Side — a jump from the 171 calls recorded last year overall, according to public records. Except for a slight dip between 2011 and 2012, the number of complaints regarding homeless individuals and panhandlers has grown each year since 2010, when only 83 calls were recorded, records show. Between 2012 and 2013, the calls increased about 95 percent to 160 from 82, according to 311 data.

Here’s why: Public access to information — The state is not required to publish government data online in an open format. That decision is left to individual agencies. Political financing — Nebraska received its lowest score here, largely because of the lack of limits on campaign donations. Executive accountability — There is no regular auditing of assets controlled by executive officials (e.g. the governor), and asset disclosure forms are not published online. Information about an official’s assets and business activities could help determine whether that person has a conflict of interest.
