Yesterday at The Future Decoded in London, Microsoft announced it was opening new datacenters in the UK, and today at a press conference in Berlin, the company announced further plans to open more datacenters in Germany, this time with a twist. The new data centers, although they will “enable the full power of Microsoft’s cloud in Germany”, will be under the control of a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, acting as something of a shield between Microsoft and the US and German data.  Microsoft will have no access to data held in the facilities without the permission of that subsidiary, T-Systems.

* Services to be available in 32 countries in H2 2016 (Adds details, analyst comment) Nov 11 (Reuters) – Microsoft Corp plans to open data centers in Germany in partnership with Deutsche Telekom AG , offering cloud storage to European businesses keen to safeguard their data from U.S. surveillance. The services will be available in the second half of 2016 to customers in the 28 countries of the European Union and the four members of the European Free Trade Association, Microsoft said on Wednesday. The move is aimed at businesses, mainly in the financial and health sectors, which have been concerned over the safety of their data after former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden revealed a widespread U.S. surveillance program.

Florida’s expansive open records laws have IT leaders preparing a new push to open up the state’s data. Jason Allison, the state’s chief information officer, said staff at his Agency for State Technology are taking steps to start the “inventory process” of cataloging all of Florida’s data, as they attempt to meet the standard laid out by the law that “all information is public information.” “We’re working real diligently to understand what we have, what the authoritative source of that information is, and make it available to the public,” Allison told StateScoop at the National Association of State Chief Information Officers’ annual conference in October. “We’re working with the agencies to start to build out that framework.

It was a week of symbolism, but there was a practical reason why Trudeau’s government chose to restore the mandatory long-form census on its first day. The machinery behind the 2016 census has been underway for months, working under the same rules the Conservatives had set out in 2010. The questionnaire has already been sent to the printers and if the government wanted to avoid the 2011 debacle, it had to act quickly.

TL;DR: This page contains example SAS code to consume a Socrata-hosted open data dataset. Specifically, we will create both a boxplot and a paneled boxplot based off of a survey results dataset.. One of my favorite tenets of Socrata is the ease in which you can get data both in and out of the platform. We provide a lot of different ways to consume data on the site while still making the data completely portable to bring into any outside system.
