RealMassive, creator of an open data marketplace for the commercial real estate industry, announced Thursday it has appointed two new board members. Lynn Atchison, chief financial officer of HomeAway and David Mather, managing partners of Ensys Capital, join Craig Hancock and Hank Seale, founder and chairman of Q2 Holdings. “Lynn and David have so much experience,”Hancock said. “I can’t be more thrilled to have these professionals on our board. Both have a proven track record of building and leading successful data and technology companies, he said. They will help RealMassive immensely on its quest to become the leading commercial real estate marketplace, he said. RealMassive, founded in 2013, has 22 employees, and recently moved into an entire floor at 1145 W 5th St.

Under a pessimistic “poverty” scenario with high climate change impacts, there could be more than 100 million additional people in poverty by 2030, largely due to changing crop yields and prices. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Nov. 12, 2015) — Louisville Metro Government has won a $50,000 credit award from Amazon Web Services (AWS) for its work to improve government performance and transparency through open data and data-driven initiatives. The announcement was made at the annual New York City Technology Forum. The AWS City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge recognizes local and regional governments and developers that are innovating for the benefit of citizens using the AWS Cloud. Metro Government’s Open Data Portal, the Mayor’s Strategic Plan and LouieStat websites utilize the platform. Since taking office in 2011, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has made open data and the utilization of data to improve performance a priority for Metro Government.

The prime candidate was just across the room. Now it’s official. At their meeting Nov. 9, council members present voted unanimously to appoint Assistant Manager Sean Metrick to the post, effective Jan. 1. That will be just shy of a year since Metrick, formerly a senior planner with the Montgomery County Planning Commission, was appointed to the office left vacant by the retirement of another longtime Narberth public servant, former Assistant Manager Fred Hansell. Following an extensive succession planning process, it was council’s thought then to hire an assistant capable of stepping up to the manager’s job.

Nearly all 50 states came up short in their efforts to open data to the public, according to a new report from a nonprofit watchdog group. In its second “State Integrity Investigation,” released Monday, the Center for Public Integrity found that 42 states have no open data laws on the books. Two states have laws that require the government to make information available, but they don’t stipulate whether the data should be machine readable. Meanwhile, a majority of states did not post the results of financial disclosure forms by legislators and lobbyists in easily usable formats.

BERLIN — Inside a dank, cramped office in a sterile office complex, the most personal information belonging to generations of East Germans sit on endless shelves filled with file cards, folders and film reels. The former headquarters of Stasi, communist East Germany’s dreaded Ministry for State Security, is a cluster of nondescript buildings that ominously squat in East Berlin. Inside, nearly 70 miles of documents consisting of 39 million file cards and 1.8 million photos, film negatives and slides offer a behind-closed doors profile of East Germany for 40 years. Under a massive surveillance system that mirrored a repressive regime, millions of citizens were subjected to tapped phones, illegally searched mail, incarceration, interrogation, bugging devices or worse.

Microsoft just announced plans to open data centers in Germany next year, aiming to protect Europeans’ digital data from U.S. spying. U.S. government surveillance has stirred lots of controversy and criticism so far, with numerous consumers and companies voicing their concerns on the matter. Microsoft now plans to ease such concerns at least for its European customers. The U.S.-based company said that it will open the new data centers in Germany around late 2016 and Deutsche Telekom will be in charge of their operation. “German data trustee, Deutsche Telekom, will control and oversee all access to customer data,” Microsoft notes in its press release. “Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every individual on the planet to achieve more,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

The services will be available in the second half of 2016 to customers in the 28 countries of the European Union and the four members of the European Free Trade Association, Microsoft said on Wednesday. The move is aimed at businesses, mainly in the financial and health sectors, which have been concerned over the safety of their data after former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden revealed a widespread U.S. surveillance program. “This is clearly a proactive move by Microsoft to address concerns that have been building among European enterprise customers in this post-Snowden era,” FBR & Co analyst Daniel Ives said.
