Open Data Initiative Invites Attendees to Explore Use Cases at Flux Collaboration Wall WASHINGTON, DC–(Marketwired – Nov 16, 2015) – Quartz, a collaborative between Google, Healthy Building Network (HBN), thinkstep, and Flux, today announced they will present live demos of their common building products database at the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, November 18-20. The Quartz Project will be located in the Flux Exhibition, booth number 3712. The Quartz Project, an open database of 100 of the most commonly used building materials, was unveiled last month and is free and open to the public. At Greenbuild, Quartz Project collaborative members will be available to showcase the data and explore use cases with attendees.

A little over six years ago, the city of Portland adopted the nation’s first open source software procurement policy at the municipal level. The mayor’s office oversaw a program to connect startups with contract opportunities at the city of Portland. (Disclosure: I worked under the same mayor as a business adviser.) About the same time, Code for America was getting underway and cities around the country began releasing open data to spur innovation. Locally, Zapproved and GlobeSherpa are two successful startups that benefited from these early efforts.

The mayors of Indianapolis, Fishers, Greenwood and Zionsville have signed an agreement to share city data. The mayors say it’s the first multi-city open-data initiative in the nation. Fishers’ Scott Fadness says analyzing that information regionally will allow cities to sharpen strategies in areas from economic development to public safety. And Fadness says he’s already heard from entrepreneurs eager to see building permit information so they can predict which houses are likely to need new roofs or water heaters, and develop mobile apps using that information. There’s no date set for the information to go live. Once it does, Fadness says the available data will be constantly expanding.

Some of the most common data requests central Indiana city officials field are now available in an online, searchable database. Fishers, Zionsville and Greenwood are joining Indianapolis in publishing police statistics in an online web portal. The cities are posting records of complaints against police, law enforcement use of force and officer-involved shootings all on one website. The site — data.indy.gov — launched Monday and the other cities will follow soon. Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard says transparency trumps any concern over someone digging up dirt. “There’s always somebody who will be able to pull something down and say what about this, what about this. But if it’s out there pretty transparently, pretty openly, it’s just out there,” Ballard said.

Indianapolis and other regional city officials say they are opening up data about various city departments to the public. Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard joined three other regional city leaders Monday to announce a new open data initiative they say gives the public “unfettered access” to raw information on police departments and other city agencies. The launch of data.indy.gov was heralded at a brief announcement at the Herron School of Art and Design, where Ballard, along with Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness, Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers and Zionsville Mayor Jeff Papa cheered what they say is the first such regional collaborative approach to open data in the country. “Our ability to work together around sharing information is critical,” Fadness said.

The data centres, located in Magdeburg and Frankfurt am Main, will be unusual in that control over the data will not be with Microsoft but with Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Systems, which will be acting as a data trustee for Microsoft’s customers’ data. These will be supervised by the Germany’s biggest telecommunication group – Deutsche Telekom AG. Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) has decided that it is time for data trustees instead of vendor centers in Germany.

Funding opportunity on Open Data: a call for proposals addressing projects for generating value through re-use of public sector information On October 30th the European Union launched a call for proposals making €38.7 million of EU funding available under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) through grants to improve the interoperability and interconnectivity of the European digital service ecosystem. In the framework of this call, €4.5 million are allocated to Public Open Data: generating value through re-use of public sector information. Interested applicants from all EU Member States plus Iceland and Norway may submit their proposals through the call open until 19 January 2016.
