LETHBRIDGE – The City of Lethbridge has launched the Open Data Catalogue, an online collection of datasets available to the public for free. The catalogue is the latest step in the Intelligent Community Initiative and houses information on city facilities, election and census results, parks and recreation facilities, transportation, land use, and transit. The city says the selection of available datasets will expand over time. “The launch of this Open Data Catalogue is a significant early milestone for our overall Intelligent Community initiative,” said Doug Hawkins, director of infrastructure for the City of Lethbridge. “We’re making excellent progress.

A NEW portal for accessing public sector data can act is a driver for economic growth, it has been claimed. A new website www.opendatani.gov.uk gives users access to government data freely without restrictions to everyone. The open data portal joins up access to data across a range of themes, including health; education; employment and the economy; population and society; property and land; and environment and agriculture. The portal brings together, in one place, a range of data from government departments and other public sector organisations, some of which has not previously been published. The data is free to copy, adapt, commercially exploit and publish.

Telecom operators offered the telephone services – including value added services – and tried to make the ecosystem more dynamic with their own intelligent networks. And they wanted to manage applications in mobile phones too. Banks were able to manage the finance needs of ordinary people, like lend money, pay interests to savings, help with wealth management and handle money transfers. Manufacturing companies had their own machines and IT that was their own proprietary territory. But this time is over, and now companies must survive in the API (application programming interface) economy. APIs as such are not such a new idea.

The Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) initiative has announced it is committed to attending the high-profile twenty-first session of the Conference of the Parties (COP21) climate change conference which will be held in Paris, France from the 30th of November until the 11th of December, 2015. GODAN will join its partners The Government of Kenya, Transversal and others to speak and attend at several agriculture-themed events and the role of open data in mitigation and adaptation to climate change. The high-profile COP21 event is expected to attract nearly 50,000 participants in total with 25,000 officials from governments, NGOs, UN agencies and civil society groups committed to attending.

[ULAANBAATAR] Mongolians are increasingly turning to open data and smartphone apps to monitor air quality as the country’s government reveals it is to axe funds for clean air efforts, according to advocates.The country’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, is heavily polluted, yet data on pollution hotspots and trends is rare, according to OpenAQ , a not-for-profit that collects global air quality data to create an online database for use by researchers and journalists. During a workshop in the city on 18-20 November, OpenAQ members discussed with citizens and local policymakers how they could help gather standardised air quality data and share this with scientists and the public to raise awareness of the problem.

Transparency is the hallmark of any sound government, so we gratefully welcome State Treasurer John Chiang’s new DebtWatch website, debtwatch.treasurer.ca.gov, which offers more than 2.8 million fields of information on more than 30 years of state and local debt and tax and bond elections. It will be updated monthly, and was designed using an open data format that will allow taxpayers, the media and others to not only view and download information but also convert it into charts. “The state and its local governments have borrowed more than $1.5 trillion from Wall Street over the past three decades to build roads, schools and other critical public works,” Mr. Chiang said in a statement. “Bonds are not free money and, indeed, obligate the public to repay them through higher taxes and fees.
