The University of Southampton is part of the new European Data Portal, launched last week to help realize the potential of Europe’s Open Data. Addressing the whole Data Value Chain from data publishing to data re-use, the new Portal (launched last week in beta) references 240,000 data sets, and includes 34 European countries. It offers seamless access to public data across Europe, with over 13 content categories, ranging from health and education to transport, science and justice. The full data collection can be accessed, searched and re-used by all European citizens. The data available covers such wide-ranging topics as crime records in Helsinki, labor mobility in the Netherlands, forestry maps in France, and the impact of digitization in Poland.

Finance Minister Arlene Foster unveiled today a new open data website which allows users to freely explore, access, reuse and redistribute public sector information. The website – OpenDataNI.gov.uk – brings together information sets from various government departments and other public sector entities, some of which have not previously been published. With more than 80 datasets available, the website joins up access to information across a range of themes, including: Further datasets will become available as departments and public sector organisations work towards releasing more information. The move to open up data is expected to increase transparency, accountability and efficiency of the government and public sector services in Northern Ireland.

Not so well represented are ‘Health’ (with only one dataset) and ‘Education’ (two datasets), although more datasets are expected to become available soon. What is noticeable however is that up to 20 of the listed datasets are only available in the not-so-open PDF format. The portal shows a clean and colourful design, with the underlying technology based in the popular CKAN DMS software. Access to open data can help stimulate and grow the Northern Ireland economy, Finance Minister Arlene Foster has claimed The Minister was speaking as she formally launched the Northern Ireland open data portal which opens up free online access to public sector data. The new website aims to make government data freely available, without restrictions, to everyone. It means the public will have free and easy access to information on things such as election and census results, land use and city facilities. The city says the selection of datasets will expand over time but stresses that no private information is published. The data catalogue is part of the city’s Intelligent Community Initiative.
