The Baltimore-based startup uses data released by police departments to provide crime alerts via email. In working to get access to that data, Drane is also working for increased openness. “If we increase transparency and all these police departments make the data public, that lowers the value proposition of SpotCrime,” he said. As it stands, however, the company hasn’t worked itself out of a job. Last month, Drane said the company crossed the million-subscriber mark for its crime alerts. (Technical.ly Baltimore previously reported the company crossed 1 million unique users on its website, which is different.) The eight-year-old company is providing data in “almost every major city in the U.S.,” as well as in the U.K. and Australia.

While I agree with the sentiment of what you’ve written to the new owners of HERE, I can’t help feeling there’s a distinctly anti-OSM vibe from this piece. It seems like you’re suggesting that HERE’s data might be opened up to external contribution (“It would certainly reduce your ongoing data collection costs”) as a competitor to OSM, which would only serve to fracture the open data community. There’s already several other projects in the global, open geographic data space; Natural Earth, openaddresses, etc… which receive attention from the global open data community, which arguably compete with OSM. Competition is, generally, good and healthy and increases diversity.

Data.gov is the U.S. Government’s open data site, providing users access to datasets generated by the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. Users can find open government data on a wide range of subjects, ranging from education, health, public safety, climate change, and much more. Providing open data as a default through Data.gov is a requirement of the federal Open Data Policy. Open data is a core component of the Administration’s initiative on open government as well as the U.S. Open Government National Action Plan (NAP) under the Open Government Partnership. The Open Data Science Initiative project is organising a Data Science Workshop (Data@Sheffield) on the 16th December. The event is free to attend and will take place the day the December Data Hide. This workshop will be an opportunity to explore and develop ideas and define clear directions for the Open Data Science Initiative. The Data Science Initiative is a cross faculty project. The All-Island Research Observatory (AIRO), based at Maynooth University, has been developing public facing interactive mapping and data visualisation tools. One of the on-going tools relates to recorded crimes in Ireland at Garda Division, District and Garda Station level, using data available via the Central Statistics Office (CSO). This data is also made available for use on the AIRO OpenDatastore and is harvested by Ireland’s open data portal – Data.Gov.ie. A recent update of the Garda Station dataset by AIRO for 2014 and 2015 (Q1 and Q2) inadvertently resulted in a misallocation of recorded crime figures for the Garda Station of Ballyferriter (Baile an Fheirtéaraigh) Co Kerry.

Major bikeshare industry leaders agree to implement data standard by end of 2015 The North American Bikeshare Association, working with representatives from the largest bike manufacturers, owners and operators in North America, is happy to announce the adoption of the open data standard for bikeshare. The open data standards will make real-time data feeds publicly available online in a uniform format so that map and transportation based apps such as Google Maps, RideScout and Transit App can easily incorporate this data into their platforms. The open data standard will improve transparency and public access to bikeshare information and allow end users to create integrated software and end user applications.
