Crowdsourcing, data analytics, social media mastery, and collaboration are several of the strategies used by successful nonprofits founded since 2000. New business models allow for quick and reliable impact measurement, which is then shared with their donors, both large and small. An article from last month’s Fast Company highlighted examples of several nonprofits and how their strategies allow for agile decision making and small and large donor fundraising. The role of technology in the nonprofit world is expanding rapidly, and newer nonprofits that don’t have to overhaul existing systems are taking advantage. As digital natives, Millennials tend to place technology at the core of their work, bringing this perspective to the forming of new nonprofits.

We are thrilled to officially announce the addition of another 13 cities as part of the next cohort participating in the What Works Cities initiative. With today’s announcement, the program’s total reach has more than doubled and now includes 21 cities in 15 states, bringing us closer to the ambitious goal of working with 100 cities over the next three years. Thank you to the Konrad Adenauer Foundation for hosting me to speak today. The Konrad Adenauer Foundation has done excellent work to build foundations between Germany and the UK for 50 years. It’s a great honour to be here. And for me, there’s something very special about coming to Germany to talk about open data, because this country was the birthplace of a much earlier data revolution. In about 1450 a Mainz goldsmith – Johannes Gutenberg – perfected the mechanical printing press. And because the process itself could be easily copied, the number of printed texts in Europe exploded: from virtually none in 1450 to around 20 million by 1500. The result of that technological improvement was the birth of mass literacy, the rise of mass culture, and ultimately, the end of feudal society.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Local government payroll information and purchase orders will soon be available on the City’s open data portal. Mayor Jim Gray announced Thursday that Lexington has been selected to participate in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ “What Works Cities” – one of the largest-ever efforts to enhance the use of data and information in the public sector. “An important part of running government efficiently is transparency,” Gray said. “The public has the right to see how their tax dollars are being spent, and we want to make it easier for citizens to track local government personnel expenses and contracts. Working with What Works Cities, we’re putting the City’s checkbook online,” Gray said.

Now is the most exciting time for data. In 2015 Gartner finally retired ‘big data’ from several of its ‘Hype Cycles for Emerging Technologies’ and dropped the ‘Hype Cycle for Big Data’ altogether – not because it’s obsolete, but because we have finally moved beyond ‘big data mania’ and into practise. As the Gartner researchers put it, ‘the characteristics that defined big data, those pesky 3 Vs – volume, variety and velocity – are no longer exotic,’ they are now part and parcel of doing business in the information age. But just because storing and handling large amonts of data is now commonplace, it doesn’t mean all organisations are necessarily making the best of data as a competitive resource – and that doesn’t make everyone a ‘data leader.

The National Capital Commission can do “way more” than it currently does to open itself to public scrutiny, says chief executive Mark Kristmanson. In a wide-ranging interview with the Citizen, Kristmanson said the NCC, which has come under fire for being too secretive, is already far more open than any other Crown agency, holding quarterly public meetings, responding to media requests and making active use of social media to inform the public. “But that being said, I think it’s an incomplete project,” Kristmanson said. “The government’s general commitment across the board to openness and transparency opens the door for us … to actually push the envelope. Let’s see how far we can go.

Thirteen new cities will get coaching and technical assistance from national experts on public data and performance management, according to an announcement Thursday from Bloomberg Philanthropies. The initiative, “What Works Cities,” pairs mayors’ offices with nonprofits and university partners. Bloomberg Philanthropies, the foundation started by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, has set aside $42 million over the next two years to pay organizations for the help they will provide to cities. The 13 cities announced on Thursday are the second batch after an initial eight joined the consortium in August. Four months ago, Jackson, Miss., became one of the initial cities, and it started with less of a foundation than some of the others in the first cohort.
