Research just released about 16 major cities in Britain shows that commuters in both Edinburgh and Glasgow rank 7th and 8th on the worst odds of delays table. If you are one of those commuters then you are encouraged to use the data and analysis to change your journey to a more reliable service. Commuters in both cities endure around 10 hours of delays each year but could minimise that by looking at how punctual their chosen service is. In Edinburgh around one in four trains arrivals are delayed between 7.00am and 10.00 am and half of train services between 8.30 and 9.00am run late. The research shows that if Edinburgh commuters are able to use a later service then they would reduce the time their journey is delayed by around 2 hours over the year.

A jury will select the best entries in three different categories, plus a special prize for the app considered as the most viable business to start. RAIL COMMUTERS in York and Sheffield are among those most likely to be hit by delays on their morning trip to work. Data analysts examined the punctuality of thousands of arrivals over 11 weeks at the 16 busiest stations in the UK, which included York, Sheffield and Leeds in Yorkshire. York has the third worst odds for commuters arriving on time between 7am and 9am, falling shortly below Birmingham and Manchester. On average every two in five (41 per cent) train services arrived late into York’s main station between 7–10am. They also found train delays progressively get worse every half hour between 7–10am in York, and over half of trains arrive late between 9–10am (53-55 per cent) – around 13 per cent higher than the average across all 16 cities.

We’re delighted to partner with the Web Foundation to help make this vision a reality.” Advance the international Open Data Charter. We helped to imagine and build  this new initiative, which aims to unite national, regional and local governments around a core set of open data principles.

THE ‘STARVING’ of investment in Yorkshire rail routes has been shown in new figures showing how likely commuters are to be delayed on their journey to work, campaigners say. Data analysts examined the punctuality of thousands of arrivals over 11 weeks at the 16 busiest stations in the UK, including Leeds, Sheffield and York in Yorkshire. Leeds ranked 11th – the best city in Yorkshire – but still showed significant delays. In total, 33.6 per cent of trains arriving in the city were late, delayed by an average of 2.35 minutes. Overall, 7,466 trains arriving at Leeds over an 11-week period were analysed by Fasteroute and the Open Data Institute. The highest number of delays were between 8 and 8.30am, when 37.42 per cent were either delayed or cancelled.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — The Education and Labor Ministry released data on employment for university graduates Wednesday, confirming positive wage growth and debunking the nation’s previous NT$22,000 average starting salary among new graduates. Deputy Education Minister Chen Der-hwa (陳德華) said the data will likely become a reference for school enrollment figures in the future. More open data analysis will be done according to each academic discipline, Chen said. The Ministry of Education (MOE, 教育部) will reportedly refer to the data to distribute grants for private institutions, considering factors such as the academic department’s employment rate post-graduation and wage levels.

As a participant in OpenCon 2015, a conference geared towards Early Career Researchers in all disciplines, PLOS had the opportunity to hear what the next generation of open science innovators are thinking and doing, and to share a few of the initiatives at PLOS aimed at serving and supporting this community. In a video address, PLOS Executive Editor Veronique Kiermer highlights The Student Blog and the PLOS Early Career Researcher Travel Award Program, two opportunities for young researchers to engage with PLOS. Kiermer also addresses additional concerns of young researchers related to publishing in Open Access journals and outlined resources PLOS has developed to tackle these issues.
