NYPD officials announced Wednesday the creation of a publicly-accessible online site providing incident-level crime data for the seven major felony offenses commonly known as “Index Crimes.” The information will consist of nineteen distinct variables for each crime reported, including the date/time of occurrence, location and other specific fields. This information will be posted on the NYPD’s website and the NYC Open Data Portal. The site will also include an interactive map to track crime locations. Police Commissioner William J. Bratton said, “It is our hope that the public will utilize this information to increase their awareness and knowledge of crime conditions around the city and in their local neighborhoods.

After the celebration of the third International Open Data Conference (IODC), the community has strengthened its involvement by collaborating and sharing its knowledge through the IODC 2015 Report and through our blog posts. There, our bloggers analyze all five Action Areas, including the Charter, Standards, Skills and Learning, Problem Solving, and Measurement. Furthermore, they share their progress at partner organizations, like the Caribbean Open Institute or the French office of the OECD. Several conferences and summits were carried out last autumn, like the OGP summit in Mexico City and Condatos in Santiago. Their goal is creating groups of discussion and propelling the IODC agenda forward. If you want to know the results and reports, check out our blog.

A recent book publication, Sharing Clinical Trial Data; Maximizing Benefits, Minimizing Risk , is reviewed here by Richard Lehman. Read on to find out more about what this book can offer. “The issue is no longer whether to share clinical trial data, but what specific data to share, at what time, and under what conditions.” This statement from the preface of this book attests to an extraordinary change in attitudes over the last five years, and it also summarizes the main aims of the Institute of Medicine committee which compiled this report. It begins with a statement of guiding principles and then moves through a discussion of stakeholder roles, discussion of the nature of data and its life-cycle, means of access, and the future of clinical trial data sharing in a changing landscape.

“Open” has become a new buzzword for many governments around the world. But what should an open government do and how can people help shape this new landscape? From President Obama’s memorandum signed on his first day in office through to the launch of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) in 2011 with eight countries onboard, more and more governments around the world are making promises about increasing openness and transparency. The OGP now counts 69 countries as members with more countries looking to join soon. And, in October 2015, South Africa took over as co-chair of the OGP, shifting the leadership focus of the open government movement to Africa.

The city’s property data release was named on a Twitter list of local open data highlights, started by D.C.-based by civic technologist Rebecca Williams. Other mentions include San Francisco’s housing data browser and Pittsburgh’s new open data portal. Just as physicists have the Higgs boson, we basketball fans have the ideal NCAA Tournament bracket. That’s why business tycoon Warren Buffet took a time off from sleeping in his mattress made of money and announced that he is willing to give $1 billion to anyone who can accomplish the feat. As hard as it can be, some have come (sort of) close to bracket sainthood. Problem is, two of them weren’t even paying taxes when they did.
