Provenance, in one form or another, has been called blockchain’s killer app. The use of blockchain as a provenance protocol is a common denominator of all use cases, whether that relates to post-trade financial assets or physical entities such as diamonds or goods on a supply chain. A blockchain provides a shared database that’s transparent and tamper-proof. Currently, the Bitcoin blockchain is being used by a number of companies, such as Everledger, Colu, Ascribe, Monograph, Stampery and Uproov, to prove the identity, authenticity and ownership of all sorts of things. London-based Provenance is using public blockchains – Bitcoin and Ethereum – to create a mark of trust that spans supply chains from source to consumer.

In a new video released Monday by the Mayor’s Office of Communications, the city aims to educate more Philadelphians on it’s commitment to open data. Over the past few years, Philadelphia has released more than 200 datasets from 33 different departments. The city built several applications to help residents do useful things like research valuation, tax and physical details of properties that they might want to buy. Other apps allow Philadelphians to look up a neighborhood’s crime history, or locate bike lanes, KEYSPOTS public computer centers, healthy corner stores, and more. “The City’s open data initiatives have made our government more accessible and accountable than ever before,” Mayor Jim Kenney said in a press release.

In their ongoing efforts to make city data available to all so that “a diverse range of communities can build tools, make data-driven decisions, and promote organizations and services throughout the city,” the City of Philadelphia has produced the above video explaining open data to the masses. Additionally, Mayor Kenney made the following statement in a press release: “The City’s open data initiatives have made our government more accessible and accountable than ever before,” said Mayor Jim F. Kenney. “I am excited to continue these efforts under my administration and to help raise awareness about the program’s benefits.

The Boeing Co. has an agreement with an Atlanta-based developer to build a data center in Kings Mountain, sources say. T5 Data Centers of Atlanta announced last week it’s developing a 127,000-square-foot data center in its T5@Kings Mountain for a “Fortune 50 company.” Sources tell me Boeing will occupy the $75 million building, which is under construction in the 280-acre park. It will be the fourth data center in T5@Kings Mountain. T5 has developed three others that were sold to Walt Disney Co., Wipro Ltd. and AT&T Inc. North Carolina passed a data center incentives law during the 2015 session that caps the amount of taxes the owners pay for supplies and utilities. At the time, T5 predicted the new inducements would bring development to the Kings Mountain park.

Being on the cutting edge of technology is never easy for any organization, but it can be especially difficult for smaller governments. For leaders in Albany, Ore., a city of just more than 50,000 people, serving the public and starting a transparent dialog meant opening city data in a clear, concise way while staying within the bounds of their limited financial means. The end result of the extensive city effort was a publicly accessible online portal where constituents can view the latest budgets, daily updates to expenditure data and monitor the programs their tax dollars ultimately pay for. Assistant City Manager and CIO Jorge Salinas said the city had been looking at an open data initiative as a means to make the local government more transparent for several years.

Lejla Sadiku works in UNDP’s Istanbul Regional Hub on Open Data in Europe and Central Asia, the regional node of the Open Data for Development program. She has worked on use and re-use of open data to increase transparency and improve public services, leading initiatives which aim to bring citizens, including youth, closer to their decision-makers through the use of technology, and engaging young people as agents of change through collaborative design methods. 2015 was an exciting year for open data, and for me it has been an exploration of bringing global conversations into the local and making sure local developments feed into the global.
