The seemingly never ending list of data can show you the location of fire hazard areas, sports venues, trees, wineries, volunteer opportunities, public internet access, and what every else you can possibly imagine. But for our sake, they drafted a special visual presentation detailing the tech community in Los Angeles. Using the North American Industry Classification System, they narrowed down all businesses registered in the city since 1933 to only show the former, and current, state of LA tech.

Public sector IT association Socitm has urged the Government to adopt four principles in its forthcoming Digital Strategy: simplify, standardise, share and save. In its response to the call for ideas it has made a number of recommendations that are included in a new briefing paper. They comprise: The London Borough of Wandsworth has extended its contract with business process company Liberata to manage the collection of its business rates until 2019. The company has been working with the borough since 1999, having continued through re-bids and extensions, and said it is collecting £119 million per year from almost 9,000 businesses.

Dear hackers, advocates, data scientists, communicators, and more — Open Data Day DC is coming back for a fifth year. The annual hackathon will be held on March 4-5, and organizers are hoping to host more than 300 open data enthusiasts. And given the turnout last year, when the event had to battle snowy conditions, these numbers don’t seem far-fetched. Open Data Day DC is organized by Joshua Tauberer, Eric Mill, Sam Lee, Katherine Townsend and Julia Bezgacheva, and sponsored by the Data Foundation. SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California State Library, along with Washington’s state technology agency and the Nevada State Library will receive a $470,000 award from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation for their efforts to teach librarians and other community members how to use open data. Gov. Jack Markell surprised (and pleased) members of Delaware’s open data community when he signed Executive Order 57 on Wednesday. Now we’ve got the deets about what exactly the order entails, and what Delawareans can expect in coming months. At the most basic level, the order is a creation of the Data Governance Council. The main task of the council is to put together a strategy for collecting “non-personally-identifiable public data” from the state executive branch’s 16 agencies, organizing that data and making it accessible on an online portal. Meanwhile, the state’s Department of Technology and Information is working with the Delaware Government Information Center to actually build the portal.
