According to a statement from the organization’s leaders, the rechristening better reflects its commitment to widespread data reform and its central mission to standardize and publish all government information in open data format.

High-profile retractions of papers for falsification, misrepresentation, and dishonest reviews are a blow to science. They add urgency to ongoing campaigns for responsible conduct of research (RCR). RCR is every scientist’s obligation, say researchers who have made RCR part of their scholarship. To promote high-quality science with lasting impact, these experts recommend individual actions and institutional policies that will create a culture of RCR. Outright scientific fraud is fortunately rare. More pervasive and arguably more damaging to science is hastily conducted, poorly reported, irreproducible research. To combat this problem, prominent organizations have launched campaigns to raise awareness about it, explore its root causes, and promote RCR resources.

Late last year the Commerce Department not only launched the Commerce Data Service – a data-focused startup within the office of the secretary – but appointed its first ever Chief Data Scientist Jeffrey Chen. Thursday marked the first tangible evidence of the department’s efforts to double down on its vast troves of data. On Jan. 28 it unveiled the Commerce Data Usability Project, a community-driven resource that brings context to the department’s data with tutorials and case studies. FierceGovernmentIT caught up with Chen along with Jason Kuruvilla, DOC’s press secretary for the Economics and Statistics Administration, to learn more about the work underway at the newly formed Commerce Data Service and the new project. The Florida Senate confirmed Chief Information Officer Jason Allison Thursday, after he spent more than a year and a half in the position in an unofficial capacity. The state’s first official chief information officer in five years, Allison will continue to serve as executive director for the nearly 2-year-old Agency for State Technology as part of his post. There, Allison leads 241 full-time employees and directly oversees $73 million of IT spending in state government. The mission of the agency is to “maximize resources, saving taxpayer dollars and delivering more efficient and effective constituent services in the Sunshine state,” according to a release from the agency.

In true agriculture form, a handful of developers have harvested newly available ag production data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to produce online applications that help aggies be more successful in the face of climate change. On Wednesday, the USDA and Microsoft announced the winners of the Innovation Challenge, a Devpost hackathon that challenged developers to create applications that transform new publicly-available data into user-friendly applications for agriculture and the American food system. USDA provided Innovation Challenge contestants with more than a century of crop and climate data from its Open Data Catalog via Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform.

Two Wilfrid Laurier University computer science students, Scott King and Vaughan Hilts, have won the Thomson Reuters Challenge for Best Use of Data at the Waterloo Hacks competition, a hackathon staged at the University of Waterloo’s new 6,000 square foot Velocity Start facility, aimed at post-secondary students held from January 24 to 26. The duo’s mobile app, called Acre, uses large sets of open data to help users find the optimal city to live in, based on factors such as job title, job demand, average salaries, lifestyle choices and language to narrow down the best choices as represented by an Acre score. “As we’re both interested in careers in software development, we asked ourselves about the ideal location to live if we are going to work in this field,” said King.
