This year, on Saturday, the 5th of March, the fourth annual Open Data Day will take place. For us in Open Knowledge, Open Data Day is one of our favourite initiatives. This is a grassroot event that has no particular organisation behind it, and it is able to bring together people from all over the world to discuss, hack and promote open data. From Japan to Vancouver, Cape Town to Oslo, Brazil to Nepal, London and Greece, Open Data Day is a global celebration of openness. It helps us all raise awareness about openness of data in different fields across the world and It unites us once a year as a community. Last year, Open Knowledge International started the mini grant scheme to support Open Data Day events across the world.

The development of applications and visualization solutions using data provided by the public administration demonstrates the potential of the data by identifying existing problems within the system and possible solutions and facilitates communication and dialogue between public institutions and citizens. In Romania, as well as in other countries, programming marathons or other app development competitions prove the importance of publishing open data sets generated and managed by the public administration. The objective of the competition is to generate applications that make use of the pubic open data with the purpose of offering information or services to citizens and / or of helping public institutions improve their activity.

The Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority (VTA) announced the formal adoption of an open data policy earlier this month, according to an post by Cody Kraatz. The announcement “makes VTA the first government organization in Santa Clara County, one of the first agencies in the Bay Area, and perhaps the first transit operator in the country to adopt a formal Open Data Policy,” according to Kraatz. The Open Data policy is the work of the VTA’s Transportation Innovation Center. “The policy creates a standard for proactively releasing VTA’s valuable transportation data through our Open Data Portal at data.vta.org.

CivicBLUE 1647, a data education project based out of Pilsen’s BLUE1647 BLUE1647 Visit their siteView company profile, is now accepting registration for its CivicBLUE Curriculum, a 9-week series of seminars and labs. The series, which is provided free of charge by the civic-minded technology center and co-working space, teaches local businesspeople and nonprofits practical data skills. The goal is to help participants make better use of open data sources as well as their own organizations’ data, and show them how to leverage data to grow their businesses and improve delivery of nonprofit services.

On Tuesday, the Citizen Data Project won a $400,000 grant from the Knight Foundation to further its work on police accountability. Run out of The Invisible Institute, a civic journalism outlet in Chicago, the Citizen Data Projects plans on using the money to expand its database on police misconduct, entering the next stage in a decade-long pursuit to release and share that data with the public. A turning point in the battle came in 2014, when a landmark FOIA case compelled the city to release misconduct data it had long fought to keep secret. Social media policy experts at the General Services Administration are encouraging agencies to serve up government resources to citizens on the platforms they’re already using – such as Facebook, Twitter and third-party sites – rather than limiting communications to the dot-gov domain. GSA’s Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies unveiled new tools Friday to help agencies leverage non-government platforms for communications and outreach, while assuring the public that the information comes from a trusted source. The agency unveiled its new U.S. Digital Registry in a Jan. 29 blog post – driving the concept home by posting first to Medium and promoting to social feeds and cross-posting on GSA.gov.

GeoHub makes the City’s extensive collection of map-based data available for real-time analysis and use by decision-makers, first responders, and the public. Mayor Eric Garcetti and Esri President Jack Dangermond today unveiled the City of Los Angeles’ new GeoHub — one of the nation’s most complete collections of urban map data. The GeoHub builds on Mayor Garcetti’s third Executive Directive, which created L.A.’s first open data portal. By making more than 500 types of map data available to residents, city workers, and private industry, the GeoHub helps Angelenos better understand their communities, and City departments better coordinate construction, road paving, and public safety efforts.
