In HS2’s Canary Wharf offices, everything is high speed, says CIO James Findlay. A year away from beginning construction of the controversial high-speed rail link between London and the north of England, there is a lot of work to be done. The £33bn project is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the UK, and HS2 is responsible for everything from the actual construction of the railway to the passenger experience and stations, which Findlay says is “really exciting”. “You have got to think about things like the passenger experience coming through the stations, how we can get people off the platform as effectively as possible and how they are going to interact with other services that are not provided by HS2,” he says.

Colorado legislators are considering a bill that would formalize open data policy in the state. The proposed bill would take lessons learned from a 2 and a half year open data pilot and codify them into a program. The new program would legitimize the Colorado Business Intelligence Center and the Go Code Colorado project. Currently, the Business Intelligence Center is using data sets voluntarily provided by local state agencies and offices. The proposed bill would create a statewide open data program and make more data available. Notably, the bill moves the state away from publishing data in PDF documents and toward publishing data in machine readable format.

Inside local government computer servers sit scores of potentially publicly available data sets from traffic patterns to building permits. But much of the information is accessible only through legacy computer programs that are difficult to sort through. But one new organization seeks to untangle public data and increase its functionality for businesses and citizens alike through civic-minded “hackathons” in San Antonio which started this week. There’s no hacking in terms of getting the information, rather the data is provided by the government entity and is generally available through a public information request. The more accessible city and county data is for local businesses owners the more information they have to make decisions about the market.

API tooling platform Restlet has launched a new version of DHC by Restlet, an API testing tool that functions from within a Web browser as a Chrome Web app. DHC helps API developers create and send API requests through a visual interface in order to better understand an API’s calls and responses. For API providers, DHC can be used to test their own APIs and ensure a quality end user experience. “Our ultimate goal at Restlet is to democratize Web APIs by offering a comprehensive and affordable API platform that individual developers and businesses of any size can use for all their API projects,” Jérôme Louvel, Chief Geek and Founder of Restlet told ProgrammableWeb.

There are over 10,000 machines that are currently infected by malware in Nasa, showing that the US space agency definitely does not have the best possible cybersecurity practices and needs to completely overhaul how it secures its internal network, a leading security firm has warned. On Monday 1 February, IBTimes UK broke the news that AnonSec hackers had succeeded in hacking into Nasa’s internal network for several months without being detected, getting into the networks of three space centers and stealing a huge amount of data relating to Nasa employees, flight logs and videos taken from Nasa’s research drones and weather radars, as well as attempting to crash a Global Hawk drone into the Pacific Ocean.

Oklahoma lawmakers are now weighing a bill that would require IT staff to start posting location information for state-owned cars and trucks to the state’s open data portal — but the measure is prompting reticence from law enforcement officials and privacy advocates. The Legislature took up Rep. Jason Murphey’s bill when it convened for a new session Monday, and now he’s working to allay concerns about the legislation’s provisions and demonstrate its value. Murphey told StateScoop that the bill has been a “bucket list item” for him since the state started equipping its vehicles with GPS technology, and he thinks shining sunlight on how state employees use the cars assigned to them could uncover “superfluous” trips or other cases of overuse.

The data, aimed at third-party app developers, is available for free, and has been released as part of a scheme to make the information TfL holds openly available to improve transport services for Londoners. Almost 500 mobile phone and online apps are already powered by TfL’s open data, providing up-to-the-minute information about the capital’s public transport and road networks. TfL said the new data feeds should further help drivers better plan their journeys and contribute towards reduced congestion. Data being made available includes: Future plans also include using historic and real-time data to provide more information on the predicted status of the public transport and road networks to provide customers with alerts in advance.
