The Sunlight Foundation and our partners at the Center for Government Excellence at Johns Hopkins University (GovEx) continue to accelerate the municipal open data movement through our participation in the What Works Cities initiative. Sunlight has supported local governments in the development of meaningful and sustainable open data policies, and since the launch of the What Works Cities program in August, six cities committed to the use of data and evidence have adopted new open data policies, now including Tulsa, Okla., where City Manager Jim Twombly, acting on behalf of Mayor Dewey Bartlett, Jr., signed Executive Order 2015-07 “Providing for an Open Data Program to Provide Public Availability, Accessibility, and Government Transparency; and Creating an Open Data Advisory Board.

On Wednesday, NASA rejected the claim made by an Anonymous-linked group on Sunday regarding the hacking of one of its high-profile drones. The space agency stated that the 250GB data that the AnonSec hacker group admitted stealing via a complicated process involving compromising of NASA’s networks comprised of information that was already public. This Sunday, AnonSec made headlines by posting the massive data belonging to NASA on Pastebin, which included around 150GB of drone logs along with names, email addresses and phone numbers of more than 2400 NASA employees. The data immediately started featuring on various servers.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman today (Wednesday) launched the third phase of Financial Inclusion Literacy programme for strengthening entrepreneurial capacity. Delaware is redoubling its open data efforts, Gov. Jack Markell has announced. Through the signing of Executive Order 57, the governor mandated the creation of a Data Governance Council that will help executive branch agencies publish their data on the state’s open data portal. “In today’s technology-driven world, we can do more to improve transparency by sharing non-identifiable public data in a format that is user friendly for members of the public seeking information,” Markell said in a press release. “The Delaware Open Data Portal offers this access in a central location and will facilitate better data sharing and collaboration across public agencies, nonprofits and the private sector to spur innovation and develop applications that can benefit our communities.

Initiatives in the UK are starting to democratize the availability of information, but many people still find it hard to access or understand data from governments and local councils. That’s the problem DataPress is trying to solve. The London-based startup, founded by former developers who worked on the UK Government’s data.gov.uk website, transforms data from local governments into easy-to-use resources for residents and communities. The founders also believe more open data will help encourage startups, with entrepreneurs using data to develop business ideas.
