IBM expanded its Cloud Data Services portfolio with over 25 services now available on the IBM Cloud that are designed to help developers build, deploy and manage web and mobile applications and enable data scientists to discover hidden trends using data and analytics in the cloud. The hybrid cloud services can be deployed across multiple cloud providers and are based on open source technologies, open ecosystems that include company and third-party data, and open architectures that allows data to flow amongst the different services. The new offerings build on the blue giant’s investment in Apache Spark and further complement its mission to provide enterprise class support for open source developers and data handlers of any level.

News: Graph databases and predictive analytics have been added to cloud service. IBM is expanding its Cloud Data Services portfolio with the addition of more than 25 services. The services, which will be available on the company’s cloud platform Bluemix, are being aimed at helping developers and data scientists to build and move data into the cloud. Designed to be hybrid cloud services, they are designed to be deployed across multiple cloud providers and are based on open source technologies, open ecosystems that include company and third-party data, and open architectures that should help data to flow among different services.

Keeping track of the many graph analytics platforms and databases that exist and weighing their relative advantages could be a full time job. An informal count of relatively well-known offerings brings the total well past sixty, and that includes mostly vendor-backed efforts, but some Apache projects, including Orly, Cayley, ArangoDB, and a handful of others. As Adam Kocoloski, CTO of IBM’s Cloud Data Services, tells The Next Platform, “When we think about the market for graph database systems, the fact is, there are quite a few of them out there and this has led to people being a bit reticent to experiment with them. There are a lot of use cases and problems that are amendable to graph analysis but with so much variety in the market, all of this has a slower adoption track than in could.

Los Angeles isn’t the first American city to open selected databases to the public.  However, the launch of GeoHub last week may be the most ambitious such effort to date. As what the city calls “one of the nation’s most complete collections of urban map data,” GeoHub is a portal of location-based open data from across city departments that empowers both the public and city employees to explore, analyze and build on the data. “On its own, data gives us important insights into how our city works, and now we are putting open data to work,” Mayor Eric Garcetti told the press on Jan. 29.

Amid a scorching drought, combined with salt water intrusion, that is biting rice and ‘cash crop’ farmers on the Essequibo Coast, a top government official says drainage and irrigation workers there maybe engaging in political sabotage. The Prime Minister’s Special Representative in Region Two, Karan Chand told reporters that he believes that a number of the rangers might be sabotaging the drainage system in this agriculture-dependent stronghold of the main opposition People’s Progressive Party Civic. “There seems to be some sabotage in the region and this is politically driven and rangers are not doing their work,” he said. Chand added that farmers were complaining that they were not seeing the rangers in the backlands monitoring the regulation of water and the cleaning of canals.

The House passed a group of five bills Feb. 3 that includes a measure to allow public companies with annual revenues of under $250 million to opt out of filing financial information with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in machine-readable XBRL format. The bill “provides a voluntary, I repeat, voluntary exemption from reporting an XBRL data format for emerging growth companies and smaller, public companies, the cost and use of which have continually been questioned in our committee,” said Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee. Opponents of changes to the filing requirement argue that by allowing companies to opt out of reporting machine-readable data to the SEC, the bill will decrease financial transparency.
