The province of Nova Scotia has launched its new open data portal, publishing a catalogue of more than 130 datasets now neatly collected and available to download. “Open data is one part of our vision for an open and accountable government,” said premier Stephen McNeil in a release. “By making our data widely available, individuals have easier access to the information they can use to understand their government, support their businesses, gain new insights and make new discoveries.” A lot of this information was already available publicly but not collected all in one place or formatted into easy-to-play-around-with datasets. Some of the information is also, well…calling it data is being generous.

Nova Scotians will now have free, easy access to a wider range of provincial government data. Premier Stephen McNeil and Internal Services Minister Labi Kousoulis announced a new data portal at a launch event Friday at the Halifax Central Library. More than 130 government data collections are now available to individuals, researchers and entrepreneurs. “Open data is about drawing on the collective knowledge and innovation of Nova Scotians to help grow our economy and improve the lives of those around us,” McNeil said in a news release. “Open data is one part of our vision for an open and accountable government.

Every time you visit a website, turn on an app, or go through a subway turnstile, you’re offering up personal data. Often, this data is sold on and re-used by a third party, and most of the time we have no idea what’s going on, even if we’ve consented to the transfer. To help make sense of these hidden processes, researchers have created theDataMap, an expanding map of personal data flows. It shows how more than 2,000 organizations collect personal information and, in turn, how that information is then passed on. “We live in a time of ‘open data’ when people are supposed to share their data freely,” says Latanya Sweeney, who leads the project. “But it’s free and open only when it gets into the vaults of private corporations. You don’t know what they do with it.

IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced a broad expansion of its Cloud Data Services portfolio with more than 25 services now available on the IBM Cloud. They are designed to help developers build, deploy and manage web and mobile applications and enable data scientists to discover hidden trends using data and analytics in the cloud. The hybrid cloud services can be deployed across multiple cloud providers and are based on open source technologies, open ecosystems that include company and third-party data, and open architectures that allows data to easily flow amongst the different services.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) denied, Tuesday, that a hacking group was able to access one of the space agency’s drones. On Sunday, in a post on Pastebin, an Anonymous hacking collective-affiliated group called AnonSec claimed to have breached NASA. The data they have uploaded online contained 150 GB-worth of drone logs, emails, and numbers of 2,400 staff. AnonSec also claimed that one of NASA’s Northrop Grumman Global Hawk drone was controlled semi-partially by the group when it was flying over the Pacific, Forbes reports. The claims prompted an investigation by NASA but the space agency, however, brushed off the hacktivist’s claim. NASA told Forbes: “Control of our Global Hawk aircraft was not compromised.

The city of San Diego launched its open data initiative to much fanfare in July 2014, promising an era of transparency and robust citizen engagement around massive amounts of information the city collects and stores. The city hired a chief data officer to oversee the implementation of an ambitious agenda of reviewing all the data under its roof and releasing data sets through a portal on its website. The promise was that information on everything from employee salaries to parking tickets would be easily accessible to regular San Diegans. More than a year and a half after that launch, city officials have compiled a list of some 2,000 data sets, half of which they consider to be public. However, despite official requests from inewsource, the city has refused to release the list.

Since 1998 the Environment Agency has used lasers to scan and map the English landscape from above to help with work such as flood modelling and tracking changing coastlines. But these LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data are also publically available and have been used to help with everything from building virtual worlds to managing forests. This LIDAR data bonanza has proved particularly helpful to archaeologists seeking to map Roman roads that have been ‘lost’, some for thousands of years. Their discoveries are giving clues to a neglected chapter in the history of Roman Britain: the roads built to help Rome’s legions conquer and control northern England.
