OGC and OGC’s Testbed 11 interoperability initiative, which addressed Urban Climate Resilience, were officially recognized in the December 2014 Fact Sheet about the White House Climate Data Initiative. Also mentioned in that document were GoodCompany Ventures (GCV) and the expansion of Climate Ventures 2.0. Climate Ventures 2.0 is GCV’s  initiative to mobilize, scale, and deploy entrepreneurial innovations in response to acute climate threats at the intersection of food and water security. GCV launched Climate Ventures 2.0 in collaboration with the White House Climate Data Initiative, and now GCV has announced an open call for applications for Climate Ventures 2.0.

Technology can be a blessing and a curse.  Transparency and access to data at our fingertips is a beautiful thing. However, access to personal data without meaningful privacy protection and controls is a dangerous thing. Shortly after Christmas, former Philadelphia Mayor, now newly minted CNN political commentator, Michael Nutter, gave the city a gift of the digital kind.  The City released property tax delinquency data on opendataphilly.org.  Information includes homeowner’s name, address and the amount of taxes owed.  The data can also be downloaded directly from the website and developers and tech-savy individuals can use the data to make customized apps at-will.

Members of city council heard an update on the Intelligent Community Initiative at the Community Issues Committee meeting earlier this week. Lethbridge has been recognized as one of the top 21 smart communities for 2016, by the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF). The four-year Intelligent Community initiative began in November 2014, after approval from city council. It started as a partnership between the City of Lethbridge and Economic Development Lethbridge (EDL) to develop a strategy to become a digitally innovative community. In 2015, much progress was made towards this goal. An Intelligent Community Steering Committee comprised of 20 members was formed.

IBM is aiming to bolster its cloud business by launching a set of developer tools to help software makers build, deploy and manage web and mobile apps in the cloud. Big Blue also said the tools will make it easier for data scientists to spot trends in data while carrying out analysis in cloud-based environments. The new developer and analytics tools will be available both on the IBM Cloud as well as rival cloud platforms. In addition to self-service capabilities for everything from data preparation, migration, and integration, to tools for advanced data exploration and modelling, IBM has introduced four cloud data services.

The Internet of Things, a term coined back in 1999 by Kevin Ashton, describes a system of computers capable of “knowing things” without the need for human input. The term has now been fully absorbed into the mainstream tech (and indeed consumer) audience. We could barely move for IoT headlines and predictions during CES a few weeks ago! And perhaps for good reason – this sector is expected to grow to reach a value of $1.6bn worldwide by 2021. The digital revolution, in which technology marches from simple user-operated devices to fully automated ones, is slowly becoming reality, with 2016 promising to be the year where we finally see these interconnected devices become part of everyone’s daily life.
