Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said Thursday that the agency needs to improve its relationship with third-party app developers, following a Washington Post story that highlighted problems in communication between the agency and software engineers. D.C. Council member Jack Evans raised the issue at a hearing of the Council’s Committee on Finance and Revenue, where Wiedefeld appeared alongside Metro Transit Police Chief Ron Pavlik Jr. to discuss  safety, operations and finances of the system. Evans, who was recently named Metro board chairman, heads the Council’s committee.

FREMONT, CA: With an ever increasing reliance on spatial and location-critical data, demand for technological expertise has grown exponentially. Looking for such technical support in accomplishing its open data initiative, Nottingham City Council turned towards leveraging Feature Manipulation Engine (FME) technology with the support from 1Spatial’s certified FME consultants, reports SpatialNews.com. Set on the idea of free data availability for everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control, the Council’s open data initiative has made it possible to have over 90 different data sets on the city’s open data site available for access.

The Indonesian Government is releasing data on ministries’ and cities performance to encourage them to improve standards. The data published by the Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucracy Reform shows how well the government is performing on public service delivery, accountability and reducing corruption. The data comes from the government’s own evaluations of all ministries and local governments, public complaints and officials’ self assessments. The ministry is “exploring ways of using open data as a tool in advancing bureaucracy reform”, wrote Open Data Lab Jakarta – a unit of the World Wide Web Foundation that is working with the government to publish the data. Making this data publicly known could push agencies to step up their performance.

The UK National Food Survey shows that Britons’ consumption of white bread dropped by 75 per cent since 1974, while brown and wholemeal bread has risen by 85 per cent. The Survey also reveals that quick-fix foods have always been popular, but while households in the 1970s were asked to record levels of instant milk, instant potato and tinned peaches, today sales of convenience foods like frozen pizza and pasta have skyrocketed. In 1989 households were asked for the first time whether they owned a microwave, and since then the number of ready meals we buy has more than doubled.

Yesterday Aylin shared a text about the upcoming yearly returning hackathon in Sweden run by Swedish authorities called “Hack For Sweden”, this year taking place in March 2016. Although more and more data is being made available, the development as you can see in our Local Open Data Index is quite slow. We also found what we consider to be an important data set to be missing that is not provided by the Swedish government. This is the raw data on how to contact them with a typical open data feature – everything in bulk. So, as an ordinary user of the Free Software Office-suite LibreOffice and it’s spreadsheet software called LibreOffice Calc, I made a little hack. This is how I did it: This whole process felt like quite a difficult and unsatisfactory experience.

The deal announced yesterday between Current – GE’s energy-focused startup – and JPMorgan Chase & Co. for a massive LED replacement project has the feel of being something of a milestone. One thing that is for certain is that it’s about more than the LEDs. And that’s saying a lot: The deal, according to the company, is the “world’s largest single-order LED installation to date.” It could cover 25 million square feet at about 5,000 branches and has the potential to reduce the light-related energy use at the branches by more than half. That’s an impressive LED project that would be significant news if that was it. But there is more – a lot more – suggested by the move.
