DigitalOcean, an American cloud infrastructure provider and hosting company, today said it plans to open a data center in India this year, with an initial investment of up to USD 5 million. The company is planning to have an initial investment of up to USD 5 million to build its local facility and operation in 2016, the company’s CEO and co-founder Ben Uretsky told reporters here. “We are here to help the booming economy in India continue to grow and succeed,” he added. Uretsky said the company has big plans for 2016 and is actively working on a robust storage and a monitoring solution to complement its current product offerings. “Developers in India will have first access to these cutting-edge technologies in our new data centre in Bengaluru,” he added.

Facebook has announced it will make highly detailed maps of places where it believes people are living available to the public later this year. The social network has been using artificial intelligence software to scan satellite imagery and identify human-built structures. It hopes to use the information to determine where internet-beaming drones would best be deployed. But it suggests others could also make use of the maps. “We believe this data has many more impactful applications, such as socio-economic research and risk assessment for natural disasters,” Facebook said in a blog. “I am torn in my reaction between excitement at the technical innovation and concern about the public policy issues,” said Emily Taylor, an associate fellow at the Chatham House think tank.

It is time to modernize the Colorado Open Records Act, or CORA, to ensure the public can access government records in digital formats that allow them to understand and analyze the contents of these public records. The public must have access to such records to hold their governments accountable and to promote greater transparency, civic engagement and public trust. This is why I am sponsoring SB16-037, which will be heard in the Senate State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee on Wednesday. I decided to work on this issue because of a circumstance that occurred in Fort Collins last year and was reported in the Coloradoan. Colorado State University was conducting a study on gender pay equity, and the Coloradoan asked to see records related to the study.

New York-based developers’ cloud computing platform DigitalOcean on Monday said it will set up a data centre in and offer solutions to startups, individual developers and other non-enterprise clients. “Currently there are no simplified and tailor-made cloud computing solutions to individual developers and startups who do not fit the target profile of large cloud solutions providers. We aim to cater to this niche segment with our solutions where they can launch a virtual server in seconds,” said its COO Karl Alomar. He said India’s vibrant startup community with ever rising startups – 4,000 in 2015 – and considering the software developers to touch five million by 2018, DigitalOcean’s solutions are best suited for them to be taken up at an affordable price point of $10 per GB of memory.

Proponents of open data have long argued that the release of government information to the public could result in meaningful impact for citizens. To date, though, little evidence has demonstrated the real-world impacts of open data. Indeed, the field has lacked a taxonomy or framework to help measure and assess the effects of the broad range of open data initiatives underway around the world. Last month, the GovLab and Omidyar Network launched Open Data’s Impact (odimpact.org), a custom-built repository offering a range of in-depth case studies on global open data projects.

California and the town of Framingham, MA decide to implement an open data portal, and the newly published GovTech100 list, featuring Socrata, also made the news.
