MapR Technologies, which we’ve reported on extensively as it has focused on Hadoop and the Big Data space, has gained a powerful and experienced partner. It has formed a partnership with Ericsson, and the two companies are working together to advance adoption of the MapR Converged Data Platform. The platform integrates file, database, stream processing and analytics, and is gaining attention at enterprises. It’s also interesting because it marries Hadoop and Spark, which are probably the hottest open technologies in the Big Data space. “Ericsson has chosen to partner with MapR for its leadership in powering innovative data applications for some of the world’s largest organizations, said Peter Hartlev, head of PL data and storage, cloud, Ericsson.

When I speak about big data with government leaders in our client countries around the world, I often find that many have some awareness of big data, but for many, that’s where the story ends. Most are not sure how it is going to affect them or what they should do. Most leaders are largely unaware that the impact of big data is likely to be broad and deep. What governments do (or fail to do) will likely shape up the competitiveness of their countries’ businesses for the next generation. In countries further along on its adoption curve, big data has already started to transform not only the information technology sector but almost every business in every industry.

Researchers in the United States who have infected monkeys with Zika virus made their first data public last week. But instead of publishing them in a journal, they have released them online for anyone to view — and are updating their results day by day. The team is posting raw data on the amount of virus detected in the blood, saliva and urine of three Indian rhesus macaques, which they injected with Zika on 15 February. “This is the first time that our group has made data available in real time,” says David O’Connor, a virologist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a leader of the project, whose scientists have dubbed themselves ZEST (the Zika experimental-science team).

“Bringing this data together in an easy-to-use online resource helps federal, state and private partners better target our work to restore and protect this vast landscape – supporting wildlife, rural economies and the Western way of life,” said NRCS Chief Jason Weller. “This is another great example of how using scientific data and technology makes partnerships like the Sage Grouse Initiative more effective.” Terrell Erickson, director of NRCS’ Ecological Sciences Division, unveiled the new mapping tool today at the Sagebrush Conference in Salt Lake City. Now available at map.sagegrouseinitiative.com, this first version of the tool currently allows farmers, ranchers, conservationists and other partners to analyze data on the encroachment of conifers and cheatgrass on key rangeland.

We’ve just launched a new, pilot global subnational population database featuring time series population estimates for 75 countries at the first-level administrative divisions (provinces, states, or regions). The database has time series data that spans 15 years (2000-2014), with total population numbers for each area and the shares relative to total national population estimates. What’s new about this? The common data source of population estimates for most countries is a census, often conducted every 10 years or so. Many countries publish annual estimates between census years, but few publish similar population estimates for subnational regions. This database aims to provide intercensal estimates using a standard methodology.

Arlington County today launched two new efforts under its Open Government Program to make County Government more transparent through increased availability of data and greater accessibility to decision-making. The Open Data Portal offers an expanded number of data sets, including topics such as Public Safety, Health and Food Inspections, Demographics, Economic Indicators Transportation, and more online. Webcasting of Planning and Transportation commission meetings, and County Board work sessions, will make the deliberations that take place in those meetings more accessible to the public. “Our residents are busy people who cannot always make it to the County Board Room to sit through hours of discussion,” said Arlington County Board Chair Libby Garvey.
