See how Ordnance Survey Ireland brought the public sector together to share geospatial data. OSi recently commissioned an economic report on Ireland’s geospatial industry. The assessment, carried out by an independent economic research organisation concluded that better use of location-based information in Ireland enables the public sector to save 82 million euros annually, frees up enough time to equal 279 million euros, and provides 104 million euros in competition benefits across the country. The Open Data Day 2016  was successfully hosted and celebrated in Cameroon by the netsquared Yaoundé community.  The theme of the day was ‘Empowering Cameroonians to accelerate open data’, bringing together 90 participants. The event was hosted in Paraclete Institute in Yaoundé, which brought together multiple stakeholders and students, to empower them in advancing open data in this part of the world. The event started at 3pm with a theoretical session and ended with a practical workshop at 7pm. The theoretical session was hosted to shared with participants the basic concept of open data, its importance, and how it could be accelerated.

As part of the mayor’s new “Smart City Vision,” San Jose launched an online data portal to improve public access to information about the city. The website—data.sanjoseca.gov—is part of an open data policy approved by the City Council earlier this week. City officials hope the policy and online information hub will encourage the public to analyze datasets and improve public services. “We live in the most innovative community on the planet,” Mayor Sam Liccardo said in a statement. “By making our city data more open and accessible to the public, we have the opportunity to embrace ‘the wisdom of the crowd’ to really help move our city forward.” Exempted from the policy are data that violate privacy laws, including privileged information or compromise security.

Chennai: To make differently-abled electors participate in the poll process, EC’s  website will be made accessible soon, and CEOs messages for elections will be available in plain language, according to CEC Nasim Zaidi. He was responding to Disability Rights Alliance (DRA), which presented to him a list of concerns, and agreed that people with severe disabilities should not be made to come to polling booths but allowed postal voting. The CEC agreed to increase the number of media campaigns and special camps and asked DRA to take up with political parties on the need to create more awareness on developmental works. He also ensured that EC will write to political parties not to use derogatory terms against disability.

Councils get £500k funding for digital and data projects 34 councils have gained funding for schemes to transform local services; winners include Adur, Worthing and West Sussex, Leeds and Calderdale, and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough The Local Government Association (LGA) is providing £560,000 of funding for digital projects to transform local services, particularly around troubled families, health and social care integration and welfare reform. Under the looming shadow of the EU referendum and the increasingly murky plans for devolution to councils, the local elections campaigns kicked off this week. National pundits may be engrossed with how the local elections reflect on the leadership (or lack thereof) of the national parties, but at the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) we think local elections are far more important than that. The local government elections on 5 May are the ones that really matter. These are the elections for the people who have a direct impact on our lives every day, the places where we live, the places where we go to school, work, play and shop.  However devolution progresses, these elections that will matter more and more as more decision-making power is exercised at the local level.
