Mayor Buddy Dyer and Police Chief John Mina are planning to unveil a new website that offers city-specific data for developers and the general public. The data that will be available on the website include business permits, business tax receipts, police calls for service, trash routes and maps of commissioners’ districts. City officials say the website aligns with President Barack Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing to use data to build trust between the public and police.

During the first weekend of March, the New York City School of Data – a network of advocates, activists, and professionals for an open data ecosystem – hosted a day of panels and workshop sessions in recognition of the international day celebrating open data and the fourth anniversary of the city passing its first open data law. City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, who have each promoted open data initiatives, delivered keynote remarks at the event. “As someone who represents some of the most vulnerable, yet resilient New Yorkers in this city, I want to make data a priority,” Mark-Viverito said at the gathering of tech advocates, civic hackers, and public officials.

Vermont Insights is the easiest way to find and use data to improve the well-being of Vermont’s children, families and communities. It is a program of Vermont’s Early Childhood State Advisory Council, Building Bright Futures (BBF). The expanded and updated version 2.0 will be officially unveiled on Monday, April 11, 2016 at the 5th Annual Data Stewards and Stakeholders Meeting in Montpelier. Vermont Insights breaks down barriers to data held by different Vermont agencies by gathering them in one place, along with more than 15 trusted data sources like the US Census. “Many state agencies are sharing their data. We look forward to expanding that number,” said Molly Lambert, BBF Interim Executive Director. The system is fully searchable and free to the public, even as it continues to grow.

Sydney’s commuters could soon be able to search the best option for the morning drive to work based on real-time data feeds crunched by researchers at Data61. Data61 – which was formed out of a merger between NICTA and the digital arm of the CSIRO – has secured a slice of funding from the NSW premier’s innovation initiative as a result of its bid to ease the angst caused by the 16 million trips made by Sydneysiders every weekday. The partnership will see Data61 experts harness real-time and historical feeds from Opal cards, traffic signals and GPS trackers on state buses, as well as anonymised data from in-vehicle GPS devices, to work out the best traffic management options and deliver real-time travel time estimates to the NSW transport management centre.

Open data is the key to change in this sector of the economy. The time has come for the financial services industry to join the open data revolution. Open data means interoperability of digital information to increase its usability and accessibility. The Obama administration has done much to make open data a cornerstone of its digital government strategy. When open data is brought to the private sector, moreover, one of the benefits will be information portability for consumers. “Informational portability” means that consumers will be able to share and use their personal data in different individual services and products.

An OCCRP and Access Info Europe report released today found it is nearly impossible for the public to access data on company ownership in most of Europe. Map of Europe (Photo Credit: Wikipedia)Titled “It’s None Of Your Business!,” the report is the result of two years of research across 32 European jurisdictions by Access Info Europe and local OCCRP journalists. OCCRP co-founders Drew Sullivan and Paul Radu agreed governments must take action. “It’s time promises on open data were kept,” said Sullivan. Radu added, “Governments must show that their rhetoric can be matched by action.” At the time of conducting the research, only Denmark provided a free download of its entire company register database, but in order to download, one must have a Danish electronic ID.

Twelve months after the San Diego Police Department was shamed with an ignominious Wall Award for lack of public transparency, employees of two other San Diego city agencies won positive plaudits from local journalists for making records more accessible to the public and press. Maksim Pecherskiy, the city’s chief data officer, won the 2016 Sunshine Award from the San Diego Society of Professional Journalists for his work establishing San Diego as a leader in open data. And City Clerk Elizabeth Maland won the 2016 Window Award for her office’s customer service in providing information in a timely and professional manner. Honorees were recognized Wednesday night in the wake of national Sunshine Week at the Fifty Seven Degrees wine store in Mission Hills.
