Analysis: The Hadoop Summit is taking place in Dublin, Ireland, April 13th – 14th. The annual Hadoop Summit kicks off in Dublin this week with the big data market in as strong a position as it has ever been. Hosted by Hortonworks and Yahoo, the event will feature speakers from the majority of the big players in the Hadoop ecosystem as well as a number of large companies that will talk about their deployments. According to researchers from Wikibon, use of big data is expected to grow from $18.2bn in 2014 to $92.1bn by 2026, a 14.5% compound annual growth rate.

In the summer of 2014, when he decided to join city government, he knew a mayoral transition was coming. He knew that could mean changes at the top, a switch in priorities and how things were run at the city’s Office of Innovation and Technology. In fact, as Chief Data Officer Tim Wisniewski was recruiting him for the job of civic tech engineer, Wisniewski was open about that, Farrell says: This doesn’t have to be longterm. You don’t have to sign up as a lifer. Give it a shot. So when Farrell decided to leave the city to join New York City adtech firm Vistar Media’s Philly-based engineering team late last month, it was always the way he saw it playing out. It just came a bit faster than he expected.

Data, as anyone in business will tell you, is hot these days. Thanks to a new focus on government transparency, more data than ever is now surfacing to help businesses make informed decisions. That’s why there’s cause to cheer a new initiative between the MIT Media Lab and Deloitte that makes advances in government transparency by allowing data from federal and state governments to be accessible for the first time. The site, datausa.io, is free and features open-source software. Cesar A. As someone who is passionate about open data, digital access, civic innovation and smart city projects, the past month or so has been pretty incredible. This week promises more twists, turns and excitement. Read along for more context and ways you can get involved. In case you missed it, on March 12, Anthony Fox, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that Portland was one of seven finalists chosen for a smart city challenge that will culminate later this spring in one city being awarded $40 million from the federal government and another $10 million from Paul Allen’s Vulcan Ventures in Seattle.

Orlando residents can find detailed, interactive maps and tables with data on when and how many crimes took place in their neighborhood. They can scroll through tax receipts for local businesses and check out timelines for construction projects and garbage collection. The city’s spokesman Matt Brottman calls the site a one-stop information shop that is designed to make sense to people. “We don’t want it to just be a bunch of spreadsheets with tables and rows,” he says. “We want it to be interactive and allow for somebody who’s not a data scientist to be able to analyze some of the basic data sets.” The open data portal is part of a push by the city to be more transparent with the public. Officials also hope new businesses will use it to find out where to set up shop.
