A recently released open data tool can be used to visualize and analyze gender pay inequality. Greg Otto is FedScoop’s technology reporter, covering all of the innovative tech government is leveraging: cloud computing, mobility, cybersecurity… A group of tech-minded govies is asking the public to build tools and products on top of government data — and help to close the gender pay gap. The Presidential Innovation Fellows, the Commerce Department and the White House’s Council on Women and Girls launched an effort Tuesday  called Hack the Pay Gap. They’re calling on Americans to use a recently released open data tool to create new ways to explore answers to gender inequality.

AS part of the City of Vancouver’s ongoing commitment to open, transparent and proactive disclosure of data, voting records of Council members are now being posted on the City website. This year, Council started using an electronic voting system which allows the City to capture individual Council member vote records for regular council, special council, standing committee, and public hearing meeting types. Voting records will be posted in the Open Data catalogue on the City website under Council voting record: http://data.vancouver.ca/datacatalogue/index.htm. Records for the April 5 and 6 meetings are now posted. The voting records extract is updated following regular council, special council, standing committee, and public hearing meetings.

The world is reportedly on the verge of a potential medical emergency as antibiotic resistance continues to rise, yet new drugs do not appear to be coming on stream fast enough to combat so-called “super bugs”. The means by which a bacteria becomes resistant are natural processes of evolution, exacerbated by doctors overprescribing antibiotics and patients not always finishing their treatment. This gives bacteria additional opportunities to come into contact with antibiotics and devise ways of surviving. Antibiotic Research UK has been set up to raise money to develop new antibiotics as well as educate doctors and the public on how to get the most from existing drugs.

Citymapper has launched an online petition drive to rally users to its side as it finds itself fighting a decision by Paris’ public transportation agency over access to real-time bus data. [UPDATE] A spokesmen for Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens said in an interview that the agency had decided to suspend all access to its real-time data because its infrastructure had become overwhelmed by third-party services such Citymapper. The agency is overhauling its architecture and plans to re-open access by the end of 2016, according to Steve Viala, an RATP spokesman. “We are currently doing everything we have to do to make it happen,” he said.

He’ll present on how beginners can get started and also what more advanced cases could look like. Doors open at 6 p.m. (there’s pizza), Laitila’s workshop begins at 6:20, and then there will be time to work on group projects at 7:20. Our new Open Data website at data.cityoforlando.net is now live. The website is part of our continued efforts to increase government transparency and spark economic development. With the tools embedded on the new site, residents, business owners and City staff will be able to easily access and run simple analysis and visualizations of select data sets. The site will also allow web developers the ability to build their own applications using that data. By publishing data on our Open Data site, we plan to drive internal efficiency, develop opportunities for economic development, enhance community engagement, build community trust and fuel our civic tech ecosystem.

Despite the differences on vivid display in this contentious political season, one point on which there should be broad, nonpartisan agreement is that critical, inherently governmental functions should be performed well and at the least practical cost to the taxpayers.  The news media reports on the failures of government nearly every day, while the Government Accountability Office and agency inspectors general periodically make recommendations for improvement.  But how can the performance of the vast enterprise comprising the people’s business be objectively evaluated on an ongoing basis? Nearly a quarter of a century ago, Congress passed the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) to help answer that question.
