Data was the main course at the annual ceremony of the AXA Research Fund , on April 8, a feast of fascinating and innovative research. The AXA Research Fund presented the projects making up its 2015 selection and a common theme of the growing significance of data emerged among the environmental, health and socioeconomic topics concerned. “There was so much enthusiasm about bringing together industry experts and academics who have the same goals,” Isabelle Bergeron, Head of Communications at the AXA Research Fund, says of the event. “They come at it from different angles, but the objective is the same: to better understand and tackle the major risks our societies are facing. And data represents a great opportunity on both sides.

Legislation that would let people request records online, and require the state to post those records on its open data portal, is advancing. Alex Koma covers state and local government IT news and developments across the U.S., writing regularly on cloud computing, cybersecurity, dat… An Oklahoma bill to set up a new online portal for open records requests and expand the number of documents available on the state’s open data portal in the process is nearly ready to head to Gov. Mary Fallin’s desk. Rep. Josh Cockroft and Sen. Nathan Dahm’s H.B. 3142 passed the Senate last week (after House lawmakers approved it in March), and on Monday, the bill headed back to the House so legislators can consider its amendments.

Educating residents is a critical step in implementing a good data program, they said.

Data can do a lot for transportation. It’s opening new avenues for planners, engineers and researchers to learn more about the true impact of projects; making it easier to reroute traffic for optimal flow; and paving the way toward a possible future where vehicles are able to drive without humans. So the U.S. Department of Transportation is pushing to develop data as a better resource. Right now, it’s in the middle of an open call for state and local agencies to submit data that it will use to put together a national transit map. That means open data to help broader policy-level efforts at the department, from testing emerging technology to injecting more social conscience into the planning process. The department is aiming to publish the map during the summer.

Transport for NSW has opened up its real-time GPS data streams to all mobile app developers for the first time, creating the potential for a flood of new commuter apps for the state’s travellers. This week the agency launched its Open Data Hub, a dedicated portal for app developers wanting to utilise a range of NSW transport APIs, such as real-time tracking on trains, buses, ferries and trams, traffic cameras, traffic alerts and dynamic estimates of road travel times. The full range of APIs on offer can now be viewed online, and the agency told developers it would add more APIs “that we hope you’ll find useful in the future”.

The implementation of value-based care models, notably MACRA, in coming months will bring with it increased demand for certified EHR technology (CEHRT), but a lack of reliable information to compare health IT products and services could undermine the EHR selection process. That’s the conclusion the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology ultimately draws in an April report to Congress on the tools currently available to healthcare organizations and providers for comparing and selecting CEHRT products.

Harrisburg, PA – Governor Wolf signed an executive order today to release agency data to the public in open, machine readable formats. “One of our most valuable and underutilized resources in state government is data,” said Governor Wolf. “Our goal is to make data available in order to engage citizens, create economic opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs, and develop innovative policy solutions that improve program delivery and streamline operations.” Open data refers to data in a format that can be understood by a computer and used freely by anyone.
