The idea of a computer program learning by itself, growing in knowledge and becoming increasingly sophisticated may be a scary one. It’s even scarier when it’s learning to attack things. It’s easy to dismiss artificial intelligence as yet another tech buzzword, but it’s already being used in everyday applications via algorithmic processes known as machine learning. Far from the killer robots of “Blade Runner,” machine learning applications are designed to train a computer to fulfill a certain task on its own.

The government spends approximately €500,000 a month for the maintenance of government electronic platforms. According to data from Open Data Albania, the government has spent around €3 million for the maintenance of such platforms from January 1, 2018 until now. These platforms comprise the civil status system, the public notifications and consultations register, the government portal eAlbania, the treasury data protection system, the multifunctional centralized construction permit system, and the establishment of a digital platform for high schools.

As artificial intelligence advances there has been an increased push to incorporate it into defense technology. Recently, the Department of Defense ordered the creation of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, which will be a hub for AI research. The JAIC is not the first attempt to incorporate AI into the DoD, however. Project Maven, which was established by the DoD to integrate machine learning and big data, will continue as part of JAIC after Google announced it will end its participation in the program.

Sophia, the famous humanoid robot, has finally met Ethiopia’s prime minister after her lost body parts were found. A bag containing some of the robot was lost at Frankfurt airport last week, which led to the cancellation of a press conference scheduled to take place on Friday at the Ethiopian National Museum in the capital, Addis Ababa. We don’t yet know what was discussed, but we do know that Sophia isn’t pre-programmed with answers. Instead, she uses machine learning and responds by reading people’s expressions.

General Assembly.
