Montreal police will start publishing detailed crime data for citizens and researchers to use as they please. The crime data, which will be released via Montreal’s open data portal, is part of an initiative to be more transparent. The police released its first dataset on Wednesday, publishing details of the 10,860 breaking-and-entering offences in 2015 and the first three months of 2016. This summer, it will release data on car thefts, armed robberies, traffic accidents and fatal offences, the police said. The data will only cover the territory of the City of Montreal. Demerged municipalities on the island, including Westmount and the West Island suburbs, are not included.

In Venezuela, a country where restrictions on the press are rampant and access to public information is not guaranteed by law, being informed about government decisions can be problematic. That is why the Press and Society Institute (IPYS for its acronym in Spanish) Venezuela, with Transparencia Venezuela, is launching Vendata, an online platform used to easily display information contained in the “Gacetas Oficiales,” official government bulletins. A gaceta, a government document containing resolutions, decrees, administrative orders and acts, “is the only imperative with which those who govern must comply daily. Everything is in the Gaceta Oficial,” according to a release from the Vendata team.

A large amount of raw data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been intentionally uploaded online by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for public use. The data uploaded totaled to 300 terabytes (TB), which came after another one made in 2014. Researchers may legally access the information for free through the CERN Open Data Portal. The data includes over 100 TB of information gathered from proton collision at 7TeV. More data was gathered by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector in 2011 using the LHC. LHC is “the world’s largest and most robust particle accelerator” that was created in 2008. It first went live on action in September 2010 with the primary goal of further understanding the mysteries of dark matter.

European Organization of Nuclear Research (CERN) has released 300 terabytes (TB) of raw data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for the public use. In 2014 also, CERN has released the data. The information, which is the largest till date, can be accessed through the CERN Open Data Portal. The data, which is of more than 100 TB, is from proton collisions at 7 TeV. It has been added up to the previous data gathered at the LHC by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector in 2011. In 2008, the LHC, which is considered to be the world’s largest and most robust particle accelerator was completed and it first went live in September 2010. Main aim behind building the LHC was to have a better understanding of the dark matter, about which not much is known.

Police departments participating in the White House’s Police Data Initiative want other agencies to know that there’s nothing to lose and everything to gain from becoming more transparent with their data. At a gathering hosted by the administration’s Office of Science and Technology Policy at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, several police chiefs from the 53 agencies already working with the White House on the project did their best to demystify the process of posting their policing data online. The initiative is now one year old, and the Obama administration is marking the anniversary with a series of new partnerships to help spur other departments to get involved with the program.

As part of the Obama administration’s push for improved policing in the wake of highly-publicized police shootings, the White House last year launched the Police Data Initiative and asked local law enforcement agencies to voluntarily provide, and publicly post, their statistics on use-of-force incidents and other interactions with citizens. The idea was that greater transparency would lead to greater citizen confidence in the police, with more public support and fewer critical incidents. But a year after the project was launched, only 53 jurisdictions have committed to it, covering more than 41 million people. New York, Los Angeles, Baltimore and Montgomery County are on the list, but many others are not.
