According to Samsung, the Samsung Arktik Cloud provides easy-to-use, open APIs and tools to securely collect, store, and act on any data from any connected device or cloud service. Using these APIs and tools, companies can quickly bring new Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and services to market, tap into new revenue streams, and grow their business. The new Samsung IoT cloud solution goes head on with Microsoft Azure IoT. Microsoft offers special Azure modules to connect IoT devices. The Samsung Arktik Cloud is commercially available today with a tiered pricing model that developers can start using it for free at artik.cloud.

Launched on 28 April from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, Sentinel-1B has produced its first images only two hours after the radar was switched on – a record time for a space radar. The first observations were taken a little more than two days after launch, on 28 April at 05:37 GMT, after Sentinel-1B had followed a complicated routine to deploy its 12 m-long radar and two 10-m long solar wings, as well as passing a series of initial checks. The first image, 250 km wide, captured Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, with the Austfonna glacier clearly visible. At ESA’s operations centre in Darmstadt, Germany, mISSion controllers thoroughly checked the Satellite’s control, navigation and power systems, among others, during the intense first few orbits.

Earlier this year, the city of Chicago launched OpenGrid, its latest and most interactive web platform for open data.  OpenGrid lets residents visually understand and navigate map-based city data on their computer, tablet, or phone.  Yet while the application is already up and running, it is by no means a final product: Chicago plans for it to be continually updated and upgraded, with input from the public along the way. The first of these crowdsourced enhancement mechanisms has to do with OpenGrid’s open-source nature.  Since OpenGrid’s code is available on the file-sharing site GitHub, Chicago encourages users with programming experience to contribute to the application’s GitHub repository.

Analysis: From commercial to enterprise hubs, from smaller to bigger players, open source is gearing up to be the future of the data centre. The use of open source to design, build and deploy software and even hardware infrastructure in the data centre seems to be an accelerating trend amongst companies in the hosting space. Open source software revenues worldwide are expected to go beyond the $50bn barrier this year for the first time, according to Statista. By 2020, that value will rise to $57.3bn. From companies like Facebook to Microsoft and colo Equinix, all the technology giants are somehow involved in the development of open computing products for the data centre. This is aimed at increasing interoperability, making services delivery smoother and more efficient.

Presented this week, Macau’s first ever MSAR five-year plan aims at building a “smart city.” But what does that exactly mean? Experts from Hong Kong, Shanghai, Barcelona and London debated the concept yesterday during a seminar organized by the Science and Technology Development Fund. On the sidelines of the event which took place at the Macau Science Center, the president of the fund, Frederico Ma, said that the region’s development should feature “smart tourism, smart traffic, smart government and smart medicine.” According to some of the experts, developing a “smart city” could involve big data analysis – i.e. data sets that are analyzed computationally to assess patterns and trends, especially those relating to human behavior and communication – by government departments.

Starting this week, citizens will be able to peruse some of that information after the Montreal police force, in collaboration with the city of Montreal, began its first foray into the world of distributing open data on crime statistics. Statistics released Wednesday on break and enters show the neighbourhoods around the Université de Montréal and McGill University are among the most frequently hit, according to data crunching carried out by La Presse.
