BERKELEY, Calif. & LA MIRADA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–As the first large city government to join CENIC, California’s ultra-fast 100Gbps research and education network, Los Angeles will build stronger digital connections to California’s innovators, researchers, educators, and students. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti today announced that the City of Los Angeles has signed an agreement to connect the City’s databases and computers to an Internet network 1000 times faster than available previously, sponsored by the CENIC community, at no additional cost to Los Angeles taxpayers. The agreement with CENIC (Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California) will allow the City to plug into the California Research and Education Network (CalREN).

news The Victorian Government has launched a new four-year strategy aimed to harness new digital technologies to “deliver modern services for the community”. Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings (pictured) announced the new Information Technology Strategy 2016-2020 at an Australian Information Industry Association event yesterday, 12 May. The document can be downloaded here in PDF format. Currently hosting hundreds of phone hotlines and 538 different websites, accessing Victorian Government services and information can be difficult, the government acknowledged in a statement, and comes at “great expense to taxpayers”. Few transactional services are accessible online, it said, and total costs are expected to reach $713 million by 2026.

Office Delve is an Office 365 service that suggests relevant information from across Office 365 to a specific user. It runs on top of Office Graph, a database that captures relationships between objects and people. A report from analyst firm Gartner warns that Delve’s recommendations can turn into unwanted disclosure. Microsoft’s servers can discern patterns — who communicates with whom, and who reads what. For example, the system can infer that, if six members of an eight- person department read a specific report, it might be of interest to the other two members. Nearly 50 businesses, industry groups, civil society organizations and transparency advocates are calling on oversight committees in the House and Senate to advance a bill ensuring government data is open to the public by default. SEOUL, May 11 (Yonhap) — U.S. tech giant Microsoft Corp. said Wednesday it plans to open two data centers in South Korea, in line with its efforts to expand cloud computing services here. Microsoft said it will open data centers in Seoul and Busan, respectively, in the first half of 2017. The facilities will play key roles in its cloud computing services, the company added. The U.S. giant said the location was based on various criteria, including accessibility of power sources and workforces. The data centers will provide local Microsoft users with faster speed in its cloud computing-related services. Cloud computing solutions allow users to access their photos, documents and other content saved on a server through smartphones and PCs.

Manchester-based developers, Mapway, are celebrating hitting 30 million downloads across their portfolio of public transport apps. The company which first launched the London Tube Map in 2009, reached two major milestones last month; 15 million lifetime downloads for the London Tube Map app and 30 million lifetime downloads across its entire collection. Mapway have 26 apps in its portfolio including international apps such as New York Subway and Paris Metro and sister company mxData work with Transport for Greater Manchester to develop their Metrolink app. CEO David James said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have hit this new milestone and I cannot thank our users enough for their support.

The Earthworm Society of Britain (ESB) actively encourages the use of its data and hopes that it can be used to further the current understanding of earthworms, both nationally and internationally. At the Society, we are always interested to hear about how others have used our data (whether for use in science, sociology, art or anything else) and are glad to have produced a resource that is being put to use. The ESB has an open data policy, allowing open access to our earthworm records with no constraints to the use of the data and ensuring records are available at the full resolution they are accepted at. This is achieved through the submission of our databases to the NBN Gateway, and in future the NBN’s Living Atlas infrastructure projects, starting with the Atlas of Living Scotland.

City bikes, shared-use bicycles that can be borrowed for a fee by anyone in central Helsinki, appeared on the streets of Helsinki on 2 May. Thanks to the open data by Helsinki Region Transport and Finnish technology companies Reaktor’s and Crasman’s programmers; the cyclists can now easily check the real-time status of every bike hub around the city centre. Reaktor’s kaupunkifillarit.fi and Crasman’s cityfillarit.fi apps have a map that shows the current number of free bikes and returning spots in Helsinki. This summer the central Helsinki area has altogether 500 bikes in 50 different locations. Anyone can use the bikes with a fee from 30 minutes to 5 hours at a time. After the ride, the bike has to be returned to a bike station.

Despite the abundance of digital neuroimaging data, shared thanks to all funding, data collection, and processing efforts, but also the goodwill of thousands of participants, its analysis is still falling behind. As a result, the insight into both mental disorders and cognition is compromised. Maps that label geographic areas of conflict as “disputed” territories in India could put one behind bars for seven years with 1B Indian Rupees (US$15M) penalty if a recently proposed bill becomes law. The controversial bill, also known as Geospatial Information Regulation Bill 2016 would make it illegal to “depict, disseminate, publish or distribute any wrong or false topographic information of India including international boundaries through internet platforms or online services or in any electronic or physical form.” If approved, it could put large corporations like Google (with its Google map), free and open source projects like Wikipedia and Open Street Map, and several other organizations in trouble for showing areas of conflict as disputed.
