June sees a huge release for ArcGIS Open Data. We are rolling out new beta sites for users to try out and see how we are moving forward, as well as new features to opendata.arcgis.com (also available now to administrators that set up beta sites), and the highly-anticipated arrival of support for file geodatabase downloads. You may have noticed that opendata.arcgis.com has seen some changes in the past few months – a slightly different user interface, greater search capabilities, an API Explorer, and more, some of which were outlined in our April release blog post. The launch of custom beta sites sees the initial roll out of these new features to local sites.

As cities become more reliant on technology, data is quickly becoming the crown jewel. Along with this increased emphasis on data comes the need for municipal data stewards. Chief data officers have started cropping up at the state and local levels, and Boston is the latest city to join the ranks. The city recently named Andrew Therriault as its first chief data officer, and StateTech had an opportunity to chat with him during his first week on the job. He spoke about some of his previous experience as an analytics leader and also about the untapped potential for Boston’s data in the long run. THERRIAULT: For the past five years, I’ve been working in the political data-science world for consulting firms, most recently as the director of data science at the Democratic National Committee.

A little more than a year ago, Quartz’s David Yanofsky did what many data reporters do every day: He submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for a set of statistics from a government agency. Yanofsky wanted immigration statistics about who enters the country from the International Trade Administration, the only government agency that compiles comprehensive records of this kind. The ITA got back to him and said that he was welcome to the data set — all he had to do was cut a check for $173,775. After weeks of paperwork and haggling with the agency, Yanofsky is now suing to get access, and to make a larger statement about the importance of open data for journalists and residents alike.

Russia plans to expose a catalogue of near-Earth objects, a member of the Russian delegation at the 59th session of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, Victor Shilin claimed. As he explained, the Russian service would be similar to catalogue of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), but it will include not only civil satellites and space debris, but also information which does not appear in open data of the US Space Command. Along with military objects, NORAD closes data on defencive satellites of its allies, namely France, Germany, Israel and Japan. While the Russian military satellites are present in the catalogue.

Google was a pioneer of open APIs; making software available to developers to improve services for everyone, but this open, sharing nature doesn’t naturally fit all industries. The idea of sharing such programs – and notably customer data – across the highly private and secure banking industry causes many people to baulk. Attempting to solve this problem is BBVA, and in particular its software engineer turned finance and banking expert, Sharmir Karkhal. “APIs are a new thing in banking but they’re not new in technology,” explained Karkhal at WIRED Money in London.

The time has come to bid a fond farewell to the open data website that has served us well for almost six years. Next week we will launch the most significant upgrade to the World Bank’s Open Data website since its initial debut in 2010. We first announced this upgrade when we launched the site as a public beta a few months ago. In keeping with the Bank’s new look for all websites, the open data website now features a clean blue look-and-feel in lieu of the previous dark red theme.The new site retains the characteristics that users have said they most appreciate; for instance, open access to over 1,400 development indicators that can be viewed in tables, charts, maps, or downloaded in one of several open formats.

Minister of Science, Energy and Technology (MSET) Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley, says the open data portal will promote greater transparency in Government by increasing the State’s engagement with citizens and businesses, and removing barriers in accessing information. The portal, which is being funded by the World Bank, will be launched on Friday (June 24). Open data is information usually generated by the Government that can be freely used, reused and redistributed without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms. The system allows persons to go to a dedicated government website and access data that can influence decisions such as investment. An open data readiness assessment conducted by the World Bank in 2014, found that Jamaica was ready for such a system.

Next time you look up a restaurant on your phone you can find the business in Yelp reviews along with its food inspection report. Monday the city released more information from its “open data” initiative, which aims to make information more easily available on multiple platforms. Anchorage food inspection results will now be available on Yelp.com and on Muni.org. The city says information is provided with a LIVES (Local Inspector Value-Entry Specification) open data source link to Yelp. Yelp will also include a summary of the violations for the past three years of inspections.

A rental suite in the basement helped Angela Mao buy her Forest Heights home seven years ago. That $900 a month in rent was critical for her family’s $1,500 monthly mortgage payments. Now, as council considers extending that right to owners of skinny homes, duplex and row houses, Mao said it’s fair and the best way to bring families into the neighbourhood. “Infill really isn’t affordable. It’s the basement suites and garage suites that make it affordable,” said Mao, who lives in an older bungalow, but watched four skinny homes and three duplexes go up on her street. Parking hasn’t been an issue, since most homes have garages in the back, said the young mother and civics director for Forest Terrace Heights Community League.
