Netflix could opening its data door a crack, letting TV producers and TV business executives see how consumers are using its service. Is this because of oncoming pressure from the likes of Nielsen to offer up Netflix viewing research? Netflix has historically offered little-to-no viewing data — to the press or other TV companies — because it believes such data isn’t necessary in this digital age, and because it’s not an ad-supported service. But in a report some weeks ago, Netflix released some details on how subscribers binge-watch programming. Netflix analyzed more than 100 TV series across more than 190 countries between October 2015 and May 2016.

Although the ecosystem for citizen science and serious games is rich and diverse, it is largely fragmented, with a few, well-publicized projects and numerous, lesser-known endeavors. Researchers at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) are creating a new portal designed to unite the fragmented landscape of virtual citizen science opportunities so that gamers and citizen scientists will have a single entry point to explore them all.

New Yorkers feel strongly about seeing graffiti on their streets, and one data visualization enthusiast has just made it easier for residents to find out the number of graffiti incidents reported in one year and how long it took to clean them up. Nicholas Reyland used data from the city’s open data portal to find the number of NYPD reported graffiti incidents by borough and and the average number of days it took the city to clean it up, Viewing NYC first reported. He culled data from May 2015 through May 2016. “I wanted to take raw data and turn it into a visual that’s easy to digest,” Reyland said. “I appreciate graffiti as an art and when I discovered the graffiti reports from NYC’s open data site, I thought it would be really cool to see how much there is across the city.

Experts at the AWS Public Sector Summit debated ways to open research data and looked ahead to trends in open data policy. The problem with opening data is often a cultural one — not a technical one — a panel of open data experts said Monday at the AWS Public Sector Summit. As the public sector prepares for a change in administration, experts are looking to codify Obama’s open data strategy in a way that survives the transition. Meanwhile, agencies are still fighting against an internal work culture that is averse to open data, panelists said. “Often the roadblocks are really not technical,” said panelist Joel Gurin, president of the Center for Open Data Enterprise. He said cultural and legal concerns have dominated his recent roundtable discussions with agencies about open data.

Auckland War Memorial Museum’s Future Museum strategy has marked another milestone in delivery with close to one million records now free and available to the public online. “A key platform of Future Museum, published in 2012, has been to invest in our commitment to make the Museum’s collections more accessible for everyone,” says Roy Clare, Auckland Museum Director. “In four years we have made great strides to unlock the museum experience online, with a third of our collection records now digitised. By opening up so many records to the public across the country and around the world we have dramatically extended the reach of the internationally-significant collections we act as kaitiaki (guardian) for.

A small, obscure agency responsible for releasing government-funded scientific, technical, engineering and business-related documents is taking its first steps toward reinvention in the face of congressional scrutiny. The Commerce Department’s National Technical Information Service released a request for proposals for a new joint venture partnership aimed at helping the agency improve access, analysis and use of the federal data it amasses. Officials also announced a new director — Avi Bender, formerly the CTO at the Census Bureau. Since the 1960s, NTIS has stored a wide variety of government reports with the goal of maintaining all the reports produced by the federal government in a central location and making them available for sale.

Amazon Web Services today unveiled new competencies for partners that demonstrate proficiency working with civilian and military agencies, and managing government workloads in the AWS GovCloud. The AWS Government Competency and the AWS GovCloud (US) Skill Program – additions to the AWS Competency Program – were announced during the Public Sector Summit being held in Washington, D.C. Also today, AWS recognized 24 members of the AWS Partner Network that have earned the designations, either for their expertise providing technology solutions, or as vendors of software products designed for the public sector. “The AWS Cloud provides scalable, cost-efficient solutions for governments around the world,” says the AWS web page describing the programs.

Next time you look up a restaurant on your phone you can find the business in Yelp reviews along with its food inspection report. Monday the city released more information from its “open data” initiative, which aims to make information more easily available on multiple platforms. Anchorage food inspection results will now be available on Yelp.com and on Muni.org. The city says information is provided with a LIVES (Local Inspector Value-Entry Specification) open data source link to Yelp. Yelp will also include a summary of the violations for the past three years of inspections.
