The federal government wants to go in on an open data venture with an outside group, and potentially split the profits. A Commerce Department agency is looking for new ways to use federal data in business, but also to improve the access to that information both by the public and private sectors. The National Technical Information Service is collecting proposals from companies, nonprofits and research organizations who think they can help Commerce do that. A successful partner might help create products or services based on federal data that businesses, government agencies and other groups could use. They may also bring private sector knowledge about how to manage data, according to NTIS’ Federal Register posting.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is continuing its leadership in open government, by now making the analysis of its grantmaking prepared for the OTF Board of Directors publically available. The newly available Investment Summary Report for OTF’s fiscal year 2015-2016 provides analysis of OTF’s investments in communities across Ontario since the launch of its new Investment Strategy. Last year, we became the first Canadian funder to release our raw grant data as open data. Because not everyone in the sector will be able to analyze it for themselves, we are continuing our leadership by making our board-level analysis of that grant data available to the public, also under an open license.

Punjab’s IT-based education reforms can be a great model for system-wide change in Egypt’s schools so I was keen to meet Dr Umar Saif and learn from his work. It was stated by British Ambassador to Egypt John Casson on the occasion of a presentation delivered by Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) Chairman Dr Umar Saif at Arfa Software Technology Park, according to a press release issued on Saturday. Casson said that the British government was assisting in Egypt’s education system for 21.3 million students with problem of both volume and quality of output.

Thinking Out Loud, 65 Clifton Street, London EC2A 4JE, exhibition open to the public: 15 July 2016 – 31 March 2017 (by appointment only, please contact [email protected]) ‘Thinking Out Loud’ is the fifth Data as Culture art exhibition at the Open Data Institute. The exhibition is built around the practice of the 2016 ODI Sound Artist in Residence, Alex McLean, with a group of artists, designers, makers and musicians that he has collaborated with. Openness and processes of making – where any end results are left partly undone – are at the heart of many of the projects on display.

The US City Open Data Census was launched on Open Data Day in 2014 as a partnership between the Sunlight Foundation and Code for America, working with tools built by Open Knowledge International to expand its mission tracking open data around the world. This year, Sunlight will be taking on more responsibility for administering the census, which evaluates participating cities based on the publication of local government datasets. The census is crowdsourced using input from community volunteers who report on the public’s ability to access key datasets. In the two years since it was created, the census now includes more than 50 percent more cities and hosts a growing group of open data “librarians” — our term for the reviewers who monitor dataset accessibility in their cities.

The IRS is taking a step to open data on the financials of tax-exempt organizations. The tax agency is making most Forms 990 – which detail tax-exempt organizations’ financial information – available in machine-readable XML format, the agency announced June 16. The forms have until now only been offered to the public as image files. The XML files will be hosted through Amazon Web Services as an AWS Public Data Set. “The IRS’ move is a very good thing,” said Hudson Hollister, executive director of the pro-transparency Data Coalition.
