Making meaningful improvements to how the federal government uses the internet can take years, new laws, regulations, demonstration projects, testimony and dogged persistence by public interest advocates and reformers in the pursuit of change. Then, all at once, a dam breaks and a new resource blossoms into a commons online. June 15, 2016 was such a day, when the IRS has begun publishing electronic nonprofit tax returns online in a machine-readable format on Amazon Web Services. Sunlight has long held that nonprofit e-file data should be open. Now it is. “This is a huge victory for the IRS,” open government advocate Carl Malamud said in an email.

Facebook has launched a new feature that may be the closest thing a social network has done to “social work.” The Silicon Valley giant released a new suicide prevention feature to help people report potentially suicidal users. With the National Center for Health Statistics reporting suicides at an all-time high, the feature’s goal is to decrease incidents through early detection from friends and family, while at the same time providing educational resources for support.

New safety data on the city’s for-hire vehicles has been made available to the public, the Taxi & Limousine Commission announced Wednesday. Packaged as the Vision Zero Base Reports, the TLC has added a trove of information from its 771 for-hire bases to the New York City Open Data Portal. The report includes safety records like fatality- and injury-related crashes and vehicle and base safety violations that occurred during a six-month period in 2015, from July through December. In the six months of available figures, data shows that there were seven fatal crashes involving the city’s for-hire vehicles. Five involved Uber drivers. Two concerned livery drivers from Call Threes and Jaffa Car & Limo Service.

This week the P.E.I. government launched a new website, which, for the first time, includes access to a somewhat random assortment of raw government data sets, in a standardized format. The data is available to be downloaded, poked, prodded and pie-charted in whatever imaginative ways the somewhat-technologically-minded can come up with. At its most basic, the open data includes straight-up lists of things, like the number of forest fires in the province each year. You can learn things like that just by looking at the raw information. Other data sets are waiting to be sorted and cross-referenced in just the right way so as to unlock the mysteries of the Island. Or at least, to reveal trends that could provide valuable insight into P.E.I. living.

Bloomberg Philanthropies Monday added 12 names to its What Works Cities initiative, which aims to help U.S. midsize cities better utilize data to drive decision-making and improve transparency: Baltimore, Maryland; Buffalo, New York; Cape Coral, Florida; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Greensboro, North Carolina; Gresham, Oregon; Kansas City, Kansas; Naperville, Illinois; Providence, Rhode Island; Scottsdale, Arizona; Topeka, Kansas; and Wichita, Kansas bring the total number of participants to 39. What Works Cities partners with cities with populations between 100,000 and 1 million, and will work with 100 cities on a rolling basis through 2018. But everyone can get some open data help now with the new What Works Cities Resource Toolkit, also just released.

The New Zealand Government has agreed to formally investigate why taxpayer funded weather data is currently being blocked for open use – and what data could be freed up in the future. It’s long overdue, writes Philip Duncan. I set up WeatherWatch.co.nz in 2005 when I worked for the Radio Network. In 2010 I was caught up in the dramatic media changes and as a result I left radio and took ownership of WeatherWatch.co.nz, hiring one other person full time and one part time. MetService has 100+ meteorologists and NIWA has over 1$100m a year in taxpayer funding. So in the battle I’m about to describe, I’m David not Goliath. Growing up I had huge respect for MetService and NIWA.
