If that’s the case, the GovHack event being held at EIT Hawke’s Bay at the end of this month may appeal to you. It is a 46 hour competition, from Friday 29 July to Sunday 31 July in which teams compete to see what can be created from information and data, otherwise known as open data, made available by local councils and central Government agencies. Open data is information released by an organisation that doesn’t contain any private or confidential details. It is information that the organisation collects or creates as part of their day to day business.

Government and technology are far apart as cultures. Government is deliberate. A wise leader does not subject his roads, power grid and economy to whimsy. He plans everything. Technology is experimental. Technology is Leonardo da Vinci taking a half-dozen naps each day. Technology is making things work now and worrying about the consequences later. Government creates lists, policies and protocols to ensure the bathrooms are stocked with the correct number and type of shampoo, towels and soap. Technology doesn’t like taking showers. Technology is Steve Jobs wearing the same thing every day and only eating fruit. Technology wears an unruly beard. Government wears a tie that’s approved by a policy that was written by a committee following six years of research.

While the benefits of big data are well understood for compliance and fraud prevention, the technology can also deliver very useful insights into customer behaviour. Thanks to big data analytics, retail banks can monitor how customer behaviour evolves and any significant patterns that can inform which products to market and offer. In the UK, Lloyds bank has announced a partnership with Google to prototype systems to allow real time analysis of customer usage data in its drive towards improved user experience and digital marketing. Other big banks from around the world are also getting in on the act.

The city of Anchorage is investing in a new approach to technology, aimed at expediting services to citizens. Last month, the city hired its first Chief Innovation Officer, part of a strategy to bring government data right to residents. Brendan Babb and I stared at a pothole in Midtown Anchorage as he fished out his iPhone. “Of course my phone’ll probably die during this example,” he said, showing me an online tool the municipality launched to report these kinds of pesky infrastructure problems. “I would just go to Muni.org, there’s an icon, or you can go to muni.org/ancworks,” Babb said, shielding his screen from the sun. “Now I can submit a new request.” You enter some info, and basically generate a report letting the city know there’s a pothole to be fixed.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), through its regional Zika operation, visited Bolivia from May 30th to June 5th, to assess their progress in implementing their response plan with the Bolivian Red Cross. This technical mission focused their work in department of El Beni, 80 km from the border with Brazil, by working with the Riberalta branch of the Bolivian Red Cross.  Due to the climate properties of the area, this forested region of Bolivia is conducive to the transmission of Zika.  Both Dengue and Chikungunya are common to the area as well, according to the Ministry of Health.

“Big data” means different things to different people. Ask the average consumer and they’ll probably say it’s something to do with the cloud. Ask a business owner and you’ll hear about detailed information that can be combed for ways to increase profits, and an IT professional is likely going to get into the nitty-gritty of the newest, fastest ways to process massive amounts of data. For Cloudera Inc., a data company out of Austin, TX, big data isn’t just about profits: it’s also valuable for public health projects like fighting the Zika virus. It recently hosted a hackathon in partnership with the University of Texas to find uses for data generated by the current outbreak, and in just one day were able to develop several ways to model and predict Zika’s spread.

IoT is putting itself forward as a means of tackling one of the world’s biggest health problems: air pollution. A problem that is not limited to developing countries but stills plagues some of the biggest cities in Europe. Just last year the UK High Court ruled that the government must take action to cut pollution after being in breach of EU limits for pollutants for several years with nitrogen pollution from diesel vehicles a significant contributing factor. IoT is playing a key role in measuring and mapping pollution levels, with sensors and wearables used to record not only measurements but physiological responses to them.

Esri founder Jack Dangermond held up his map technology company’s partnership with the city of Los Angeles as a path to the future Monday in the opening session of the Esri User Conference in San Diego. Esri is an innovator in geographic information systems, which combine geographic data with other statistics for the purposes of analysis. More than 350,000 organizations worldwide use its products. Its partnership with Los Angeles is called GeoHub. GeoHub makes Los Angeles an open city with open data, said guest speaker Lilian Coral, L.A.’s chief data officer. In the partnership, announced in January, the city put its data sets on an open platform, allowing citizens to become fact gatherers to deal with such problems as illegal dumping and potholes.
