What if you could open your market up with considerably little engineering effort? It’s happening with ODPi (Open Data Platform initiative) compliance, according to John Mertic, director of Program Management for ODPi and Open Mainframe Project at The Linux Foundation. ODPi is a nonprofit organization accelerating the open ecosystem of Big Data solutions, and this is the first year the organization has really seen market acceptance of what it’s doing, according to Mertic. It has just announced that Apache Hadoop distributions products from Altiscale, ArenaData, Hortonworks, IBM and Infosys are now ODPi Runtime Compliant.

California has hired its first-ever chief data officer for state government, appointing 30-year-old Silicon Valley tech executive Zachary Townsend to the newly created position, the governor’s office announced Thursday afternoon. Townsend, of San Francisco, will assume the role of chief data officer at the California Government Operations Agency. Townsend has been product management lead at payroll and health benefits company Gusto since 2016, according to the governor’s office. He was director of product and channel management at Silicon Valley Bank from 2015 to 2016, co-founder and head of product at Standard Treasury from 2013 to 2015, and an affiliate at the Harvard University Berkman Center for Internet and Society from 2013 to 2014.

MP George Freeman denies government has plan to privatise organisation amidst concerns about open data impact; final decision to be taken by ministry in “due course” The Department for Business Innovation and skills (BIS) has said a decision over the possible privatisation of the Land Registry will be made in “due course”, with life sciences minister George Freeman rejecting suggestions that the government has plans for making such a move. Opposition politicians and organisations such as the Open Data Institute (ODI) have been critical of any proposed privatisation of the registry over fears it may undermine wider government commitments to open data, transparency and information sharing in the public and private sectors.

WASHINGTON July 1, 2016; Preliminary data released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show a 7.7 percent increase in motor vehicle traffic deaths in 2015. An estimated 35,200 people died in 2015, up from the 32,675 reported fatalities in 2014. “Every American should be able to drive, ride or walk to their destination safely, every time,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “We are analyzing the data to determine what factors contributed to the increase in fatalities and at the same time, we are aggressively testing new safety technologies, new ways to improve driver behavior, and new ways to analyze the data we have, as we work with the entire road safety community to take this challenge head-on.

The benefits are many. A Conservative revolt appears to have killed off controversial Government plans to privatise the Land Registry. Ministers slammed on the brakes after facing fierce criticism from a succession of Tory backbenchers in a Commons debate held against the turmoil of the party leadership race. It leaves a final decision in the hands of a different prime minister and chancellor, after the resignation of David Cameron and almost certain departure of George Osborne. Labour MPs sponsored the debate, but Conservatives also demanded a rethink, warning the sell-off would undermine the registry’s impartiality, hike fees and fail to create competition.
