Sharing data from clinical trials would ultimately be a boon to science. And though there are a few logistical and ethical issues to work out, now is the time to tackle them, according to a series of articles published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. In theory, data-sharing sounds like how science is supposed to work: Once a researcher completes an experiment, she publishes an article in a scientific journal. With it, she would release all of the data that allowed her to reach that conclusion. That way, other scientists can not only check her conclusions, but even reproduce the same experiment to see if their own data matches. In practice, it’s not so easy to share data.

This week Devex wraps up a monthlong conversation on data and data-driven development. We’ve heard from individuals working in the public, private and civil society sectors about the importance of collecting accurate data, the promise of new technology to leverage data that we collect, and the difficulties that face the global development community in order to know where aid dollars are best spent — and trace the results of those expenditures. Data is an especially important issue as the aid community attempts to hold countries accountable to meeting the 17 goals and 169 targets laid out in the Sustainable Development Goals. However, committing to open data is only one step that governments and NGOs can take toward transparency.

Every time you pay property tax or apply for a permit to build a house, government agencies collect data around that interaction. Now, imagine a city with 10 million people, each interacting with six departments in a municipal corporation. That’s the volume of data being collected and stored. Why do governments store data? In addition to record-keeping, I believe, governments store data on behalf of citizens to administer better. So, when you think of government departments as custodians of data, who collect and store data on behalf of citizens, this is the next question to ask: is that data accessible to all?
