The Department of Transportation hosted a Twitter chat on Monday under the hashtag #OpenDOT to get opinions on the agency’s open data policies. “Across the administration, agencies are working to update our biennial Open Government Plans, and we want to hear from you,” Bryna Helfer, director of Public Engagement, and Daniel Morgan, chief data officer for the DOT, wrote in a blog post. The DOT is considering five initiatives to build onto its open data plans. The DOT would create a calendar for public meetings, which would add new channels of communication between the public and the agency.

In cities across the world, governments use data—about infrastructure, health and safety, or citizen satisfaction—to improve services. But data also has a critical role in shaping the very space of the city, informing the design of new buildings, infrastructure, and neighborhoods. With the help of big data and analytics, urban planners can now use simulations to anticipate the impact of urban development programs. Using these tools, cities can become more sustainable and strategic, while the planning processes become ever more inclusive. The most fundamental benefit of simulation is the ability to mitigate the problem of “unintended consequences” by using realistic models to predict effects on land valuation, employment patterns, and transportation mode choice.

いわゆる 7 アーク南インド洋で不足しているフライト MH370 を検索が終わりに近づいています。マレーシア航空のボーイング 777-200 とその 239 人の乗客は、まだ検索の 2 つの半分年後に、検索の結果はこれまで自由に利用可能になることです。 オーストラリアの連邦の輸送とインフラ大臣ダレン チェスター オーストラリアの輸送安全局 (ATSB) では MH370 のソナー データはすべて、リリースされることを今週に発表しました。南インド洋、オーストラリア南西部沖の 7 アークの 120,000 平方キロメートルから、ソナーのデータとなります。 すべての側面に「包括的なレポート」も公開される 12 月下旬に終了する操作。

The search for missing flight MH370 in the so-called 7th Arc in the Southern Indian Ocean is nearing an end. While the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200 and its 239 passengers are still yet to be found after two and a half years of searching, the findings of the search so far are to become freely available. The Australian Federal Transport and Infrastructure Minister Darren Chester announced this week that all sonar data on MH370 would be released by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB). The sonar data would be from 120,000 square kilometres of the 7th Arc in the southern Indian Ocean, off southwestern Australia. A “comprehensive report” on all aspects will also be made public when the operation ends in late December.

Aug 28, 2016- Wouldn’t it be nice if we could cut through traffic jams and directly receive government services through an app on our smartphones while sipping coffee in the comfort of our homes? If you happen to live in a technologically advanced country, this is nothing out of the ordinary. We see no reason why we are denied similar privileges. Apart from the governments in least developed countries, the rest have successfully integrated public services using the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to allow citizens access to a range of public services using one-stop digital platforms. Now, the advanced economies are upping the ante and redefining democratic governance by embracing e-democracy—the use of ICT to support a democratic decision-making process.

Westpac Banking Corp says data sharing between companies, individual consumers and governments can provide “immense value” to society and has told the Productivity Commission it can help the economy to take advantage of the opportunities. Westpac has also launched a new data management platform called Databank, which will securely store identity information for companies sharing data through Data Republic, a start-up in which Westpac holds an equity stake through Reinventure Group.

Edinburgh and London are two truely great capital cities, but when it comes to the drive from its leaders, the two seem to diverge. While London has an eager leadership to showcase the city as a place ready for a data-driven era, Edinburgh lags, and often leaves it to its great business community to push forward. I appreciate that London has a great deal more resources, but Edinburgh hosts some great data-driven companies. All it needs is a bit of a push … a direction … a mission. In the past the New Town was created, as its business leaders wanted to create a city which could rival the create change in intellect thought: So I love the way that London has opened up to data, and see it as a key driving force for the city. For Edinburgh (my home) city, we have a poor setup.

The Open Data Handbook (first issued in 2010 and regularly updated) is a guide to open data, specifically open government data. It was first issued in 2010 by Open Knowledge International and has been regularly updated since. The handbook has been used by governments and civil society organizations around the world as an introduction and blue-print for open data projects. The Nepali version of this handbook (which is currently seeking funders) will include content from Global Open Data Handbook, including Licensing terms from Open Definition and Open Data Policy guidelines / principles terms from Sunlight Foundation guidelines. Need of the handbook in Nepal Open data is steadily gaining momentum in Nepal, led by Civil Society and a handful of government agencies.
