Pennsylvania launched its open data portal with 12 datasets  —  the foundation of the state’s central repository for open data in a machine-readable format. The data currently available on OpenDataPA supports Gov. Tom Wolf’s three governing objectives — education, employment and government services —  includes prison population numbers, school performance profiles and summary information on well inspections. The state also plans to release datasets from other state agencies on the site. The portal is built on the Socrata cloud platform, which also supports open data sites for Colorado, Missouri, Illinois and other states, and local and federal government agencies, including those of the White House and San Francisco.

[Via Satellite 08-26-2016] DigitalGlobe, in collaboration with partners CosmiQ Works, and Nvidia, has launched SpaceNet, an online repository of satellite imagery and labeled training data, available as a public data set on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The companies anticipate SpaceNet will advance the development of machine learning and deep learning algorithms that leverage remote sensing data. SpaceNet opens access to a large corpus of curated, high-resolution satellite imagery to incubate algorithm development. The product will launch with an initial contribution of DigitalGlobe multi-spectral satellite imagery and 200,000 curated building footprints across the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“So, this is number one – our agreement and promise to the citizens to be totally transparent,” says NOPD Chief Michael Harrison. With a few clicks on the NOPD’s website, anyone will now have access to policing data. “We partnered with the White House, called the White House open data initiative, where we agreed to make public certain types of data for our citizens,” says Harrison. The NOPD is one of 21 police departments around the country participating in the White House initiative, but Harrison says the NOPD is one of the first to publish the data on its website. On the site, you’ll be able to see data for things like, calls for service, stop and search, and use of force.

NET ESOLUTIONS CORP. announced Aug. 9 its plans to pilot its NETE Labs concept – a research unit developing in-house expertise in digital technologies, research analytics and business intelligence. NETE Labs acquired a cloud computing infrastructure for its activities and will use data from public and commercial data sources in its research projects. The labs will be powered by a hybrid team composed of a core group stationed at NETE headquarters and satellite offices in the D.C. metro area, along with a larger, virtually-connected group of collaborators from academia and industry. Personnel will work either full-time in the lab or contribute efforts off-hours.

The discussions are usually in a round-table format around the topics attendees decide they want to cover. A light breakfast and a full lunch will be served. A consortium of companies, including DigitalGlobe, CosmiQ Works and NVIDIA, today launched SpaceNet, an open-data initiative aimed at improving image analysis tools. The data are being hosted by Amazon Web Services as part of a partnership. With an increase in the number of CubeSats, high-resolution satellites and drones of every shape and size, we have accumulated petabytes of imaging data that can be processed with analytics to solve myriad problems. DigitalGlobe, which operates imaging satellites, has built out partnerships with companies like Facebook to target rural villages with internet access using photography as a guide.

The night tube started running on the Victoria and Central lines last weekend – Photo credit: Flickr, Martijn van Exel TfL has committed to making all real-time travel information freely and openly available to help developers create accurate products for customers using its services. The API, available at tfl.gov.uk/developers, now contains the planned journey timetables for night tube services on the Central and Victoria lines, and will be updated with information for the other lines when they start running. TfL opens up data feed to developers Do you know the right class for your data? The information will also be available on in-station digital customer information boards and on TfL’s own journey planner.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf officially launched the state’s new open data portal yesterday. The portal runs on Socrata technology and offers 12 initial data sets. The first data release is set up thematically according to Governor Wolf’s goals for his administration. There is little high-value information in the initial release, data includes things like structurally deficient bridges, new well inspections and some job training/creation forecasts. The Governor said in his announcement of the open data project that the portal launch was in line with his Executive Order pushing government agencies to release more data. However, the Order offers little more than a call to start planning and reviewing data internally at the agency level.
