Berlin and London belong to the most dynamic cities in Europe. Both are capitals of two big European economies and both attract the most active, innovative people and companies. Despite these similarities the cities have a different status in their countries; London is a super-city, which is driving the whole British economy while Berlin has high political and cultural status, but does not belong to the richest cities in Germany. This difference between cities can also be seen when the unemployment trends for both countries and cities are compared. On the one hand the Global Financial Crisis had for example a much higher impact on the British and London labour market compared to the German labour market while for Berlin only a small negative change was present in 2009.

After much anticipation, the first light pole-mounted, data collection nodes comprising Chicago’s ambitious city-wide Array of Things sensor network are finally starting to come on line. Initially installed in the Pilsen neighborhood last week to specifically study air quality, these first few sensors will soon be expanded to more locations across the city and will grow to roughly 500 nodes by the end of 2018. While a project to install hundreds of unblinking robotic sentinels across the Windy City might seem like something out of an Orwellian dystopia, the Array of Things is interested in monitoring the Chicago’s urban environment — such as temperature, barometric pressure, light, vibration, pollutants, sound intensity, traffic — and not its individual residents.

Chicago has taken a step toward what it hopes is the future. On Aug. 29, coordinators of the Array of Things (AoT) project announced that they’ve set up two sensor nodes at intersections along Damen Avenue capable of collecting real-time data on things ranging from the amount of carbon monoxide in the air to the number of pedestrians crossing the street. They’re the first two nodes of an eventual 500 the project organizer hopes to have installed in the city by the end of 2018 — and that’s completely separate from the other cities working to set up their own nodes. The aim is to expand the concept of the Internet of Things to make it more useful for cities.

Her work has appeared in the Houston Chronicle, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and several McCl… As the Obama administration comes to a close, the White House is seeking to highlight progress it’s made to open and use data over the past eight years — while pushing those inside and outside government to continue the momentum. One way it’s are doing that is through their first White House Open Data Innovation Summit set for Sept. 28, which will be co-hosted by the Office of Management and Budget, the Small Business Administration and the Data Foundation.

This week in Chicago, the Array of Things team begins the first phase of the groundbreaking urban sensing project, installing the first of an eventual 500 nodes on city streets. By measuring data on air quality, climate, traffic and other urban features, these pilot nodes kick off an innovative partnership between the University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory and the city of Chicago to better understand, serve and improve cities. Array of Things is designed as a “fitness tracker” for the city, collecting new streams of data on Chicago’s environment, infrastructure and activity.
