Nashville is one of five cities worldwide selected for a new project to accelerate the use of self-driving vehicles, joining Austin, Los Angeles, Paris, and Buenos Aires to brainstorm ways that cities can accommodate driverless cars. The announcement was made Monday by The Aspen Institute and Bloomberg Philanthropies. The chose cities will have the help of experts, policymakers, and data — and will be tasked with finding ways to address transportation inequality and to improve mobility. The announcement came at the CityLab conference in Miami. Mayor Megan Barry was on hand to see a self-driving car and to chat live with Mike Ableson, vice president of global strategy for General Motors. She couldn’t quite get him to promise a high-tech fleet for Nashville.

PORTLAND, OR – Mayor Charles Hale announced that Portland was selected as one of 16 new cities to be included in the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ initiative called ‘What Works Cities’ The What Works City movement was launched in April of 2015 and now consists of 55 cities from 33 states and represents 19 million different residents. The benefit of joining the movement is to help the cities involved move toward an outcomes-focused government. Governments driven by results have thrived more readily. Boasting impressive numbers for the participating city, 90 U.S. city mayors have found more efficient ways to use the data that their city has accumulated.

Delawareans now have a new way to access public information online. In his weekly address, Gov. Jack Markell (D) touted the release of his new open data portal, which lets users browse everything from toxic release reports to a map of restaurant health inspections. Markell says it’s a necessary step forward to increase the public’s trust in government. “Most simply, it means better access to government data – data on health, the environment, population trends and more. All of this has value to entrepreneurs coming up with new business ideas, as well as researchers, data scientists and people in academic institutions,” he said. The state is also open to suggestions on new datasets to be included in the package.

Windows7がインストールされたPCにubuntu 16.04をインストールしてデュアルブートにするつもりでしたが、目論見どおりデュアルブートにはならず、Windowsが起動しなくなってしまいました。(ubuntuが起動してしまう)
復旧の手順をメモに残しておくことにします。
この手順を覚えておけば、何度ubuntuをインストールしても大丈夫です。(^^;
syslinuxをインストールします。syslinux は軽量なブートローダです。
syslinuxをインストールすると、/usr/lib/syslinux/mbr/配下にmbr.binが
インストールされます。これをddコマンドで/dev/sdaに書き込みます。
まずは最初にディスクのパーティションをfdiskコマンドで確認しておきます。

syslinuxをインストールします。
$sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install syslinux
ddコマンドを実行して、mbr.binを/dev/sdaに書き込みます。
$sudo dd if=/usr/lib/syslinux/mbr/mbr.bin of=/dev/sda 0+1 レコード入力 0+1 レコード出力 440 bytes copied, 0.00747236 s, 58.9 kB/s
これでPCを再起動すれば、Windowsが立ち上がるはずです。

The University of Prince Edward Island is celebrating Open Access Week with a series of informative events. On Monday, October 24 at 1:30 pm in Robertson Library 312 (or from the comfort of your own office), we are hosting a webinar by Robin DeRosa (Plymouth State University): Open Education: Reducing Costs, Transforming Pedagogy. On Thursday, October 27 at 10:00 am, Robertson Library 312, Robert Gilmour will introduce and re-launch the new IslandScholar and data.upei.ca. Dawn Hooper and Donald Moses from the Robertson Library will demonstrate the services and answer questions. Also on Thursday, October 27 at 7:00 pm, the Robertson Library will partner with the Open Data Book Club to host a special event in Robertson Library 312.

The City of Fayetteville, North Carolina, wanted to ensure transparency and community engagement. So it built the Open Data Portal using ArcGIS Open Data. Citizens can now visit the portal to access police data such as traffic stops, incident reports, and crime maps. They can also look at employee demographics for the police department and use-of-force statistics, as well as find out about scheduled community watch meetings. “We want to improve understanding of policing, improve transparency, enhance community trust and confidence in police, dispel myths, and highlight realities through data,” said Fayetteville’s chief of police, Harold E. Medlock.
