The City of has created an “open data portal” to share information online with residents. “We will be doing outreach to school boards, libraries, and universities to make them aware of the portal and what is available,” said Maria Visocchi, ‘s manager of corporate Communications. The new portal features interactive maps and charts and provides information in a variety of formats ready for common software applications and development languages. The data has been available since early September. “Our goal is to make public information as accessible and easy to understand as possible,” said Hazel English, director of information services technology. All levels of government are opening their data for public use.

(Brendon Bosworth) QUITO, Ecuador — Twenty-one-year old architecture student Isabela Pineda has a pretty good read on what Quito’s residents think, or don’t think, about Habitat III. For the past few days, Pineda has been walking around Ecuador’s capital city with her mobile phone asking people in public spaces questions about the massive U. N. event held here this week. She has been punching the answers into an app designed using open-source technology called Open Data Kit. The process, she says, takes about two-minutes. Earlier that day she had been canvassing in the city’s main square, which flanks the presidential palace.

The Commerce Department and European Commission are opening an online library of economic data, and everyone gets a membership card. In an exclusive interview with Federal News Radio, Justin Antonipillai, head of the Economic and Statistics Administration, said the hope is to release an “alpha version” of the library by the beginning of November. The first iteration will include economic indicators like Gross domestic product (GDP), population, employment and disposable income.

The United States has launched 29 new digital tools built using government data by students, non-profits and companies, including Linked, Fitbit an AirBnB. President Barack Obama launched the Opportunity Project in March 2016 to “catalyse the creation of new digital tools that use federal and local data to empower communities”, the White House said earlier this month. The new tools address six national issues identified by federal agencies: educational equity, transit safety, mental health, unemployment, affordable housing and rural development. The government curated useful data at opportunity.census.gov to give developers easy access. Mental health and emotional wellbeing was identified one priority.

Civic tech advocates, state officials and transparency proponents have rallied for the site ever since the governor signed an executive order in January that called for the portal, as well as a Delaware Open Data Council responsible for statewide policies, data management between agencies and additional updates to the portal.

City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz today announced the appointment of Luke Stowe as chief information officer for the City of Evanston. Stowe has been serving as the interim manager of the Information Technology Division since August, has served as digital services manager since March, and before that served as the city’s digital services coordinator beginning in 2012. Stowe has worked on numerous technology and community engagement projects related to the city website, social media, open data and 311 services.

Delaware is the latest in a long line of states to announce an open data portal that promises new access to a host of the jurisdiction’s most sought after information. Gov. Jack Markell officially unveiled the new portal — data.delaware.gov — on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The new resource marks the culmination of more than 10 months of work to provide a one-stop access point to the state’s most requested data. In January, the second-term governor signed Executive Order 57 mandating a state open data clearinghouse to contain data sets from 10 state agencies.
