The city of Miami has a detailed map, created by its downtown development authority, where anyone can see planned and proposed real estate development projects in the city. I learned about Miami’s map while attending Open Data Day, an annual international event that’s held in dozens of cities around the globe. In each, people come together to brainstorm how to tell stories, create Web applications and create visualizations using public, open data. While attending Open Data Day, I saw many examples of what I consider great local, civic journalism — work that gathered data, processed it and then told a story that would help people better understand their local community or government.

In 2000, Canadian miner Goldcorp changed its fortunes through a unique strategy: giving away its proprietary technical data. Dubbed the “Goldcorp Challenge”, the firm made all of its geological information available to the public. And offered $575,000 in prize money to geologists who could use the data to tell the company where to find the next big discovery on the company’s gold property in Ontario — a move that ultimately led to $6 billion in new gold resources being discovered. And this week, one of the world’s go-to oil and gas nations said it is trying something similar to reboot exploration. That’s the U.K. Where the country’s Oil and Gas Authority said yesterday it will make all data on the North Sea freely available for the first time ever.

Forty-nine healthcare technology companies have signed the Patient Safety Movement Foundation’s Open Data Pledge, promising to share their data to promote patient safety. The announcement on Tuesday comes just days after Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell revealed in her keynote at HIMSS16 that health IT companies that provide 90 percent of electronic health records used by U.S. hospitals had pledged to implement three core commitments to improve the flow of health information to consumers and healthcare providers: consumer access, no information blocking and standards implementation. [Also: EHR giants among those taking pledge to standardize health IT] Cerner, Epic and Meditech were among those who answered the federal government’s call to sign the pledge.

How can local and federal governments contribute to the digital transformation, citizen engagement and information transparency? Some of these questions were in focus last weekend (4.-6. of March), when CodeAcross and OpenDataDay events were held in Zagreb. Events included different panels focusing on information science curriculums and the importance of open data for governments and communities. Weekend hackaton that followed panel discussions motivated projects focused on public education infrastructure such as public schools geocoding project. Another related project was connecting and comparing available study programs and corresponding student quotas with available jobs currently listed in National Employment Bureau.

The Opportunity Project is a new open data project that is lead by the White House to make local and federal datasets sortable and available online. Wired reporter Issie Lapowsky writes the site will have data on government job listings, crime, school programs, and much more. It will also have an app that assists families with finding housing or childcare. The idea of the project was originally initiated by President Obama. “The president has really been focused on the idea of how do you get the force of data to benefit everyday Americans?” says Chief US Data Scientist DJ Patil. We should think of technology as neither radical nor revolutionary, unless it impacts every single person.” “We’ve shifted into a model where people are really empowered to take control of their communities.

The White House is pushing for greater civic engagement through an open data initiative called the “Opportunity Project”. The project was demonstrated at an event held in Washington DC yesterday afternoon. The outward facing part of the initiative is an open data portal managed by the Census Bureau that houses a range of municipal data that policymakers and developers can use and learn from. Federal data sets are also included on the website and the White House says that more are in the pipeline. The White House is also using the portal as a hub for data tools that were created in collaboration with eight cities to help users understand what is available in the data and make sense of it.

If you can inspire people to make tools that help communities understand and improve themselves by releasing the data they need, they will. That, at least, is what the White House is hoping with the launch of The Opportunity Project, a new initiative from the Obama administration that builds upon nearly seven years of effort to release government data to the public, for the public. The White House is hoping to inspire developers to build tools using federal and city data that will make it easier for decision makers to access the information they need. That’s far from new: The White House has been trying to inspire the nation’s software developers to build tools using open government data since May 2009, when the former US chief information officer Vivek Kundra first launched Data.

The White House’s new open data initiative, the Opportunity Project, aims to improve economic mobility for citizens with the release of federal and local datasets and easy-to-use digital tools. The Opportunity Project launched March 7 in conjunction with the Census Bureau’s release of its Opportunity.Census.gov platform, which allows developers, community groups and local governments to build or use tools for finding jobs, housing, transportation, schools and neighborhood amenities. The site includes health, commercial and agricultural datasets from federal agencies, as well as publically available data generated primarily by the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. A year after Premier Wade MacLauchlan committed to making government data more open and accessible, tech types in Charlottetown took to their computers Saturday in celebration of International Open Data Day. The group spent much of Saturday building applications based on open data offered up by the province, a main sponsor of the event. Organizer Dustin Sparks said the day is about making information more accessible to the general public. “It’s something that’s gaining a lot of attention here and momentum,” he said. “And that’s why the government was happy to sponsor this event, it’s an on-going conversation that is pretty exciting.

IRVINE, Calif.–(Business Wire)– The Patient Safety Movement Foundation announced today that 49 healthcare technology companies have signed the Patient Safety Movement’s Open Data Pledge, a public pledge to share their data to promote patient safety. The pledge is designed to foster a marketplace of data analytics to encourage entrepreneurs to develop novel uses of health data that will improve patient safety and reduce preventable deaths. If enough medical technology companies share the data their products are purchased for, it allows engineers and researchers to develop predictive algorithms that notify clinicians and patients of dangerous trends. The pledge does not ask any company to share protected or proprietary data or not follow all the privacy laws.
